Commander Sized 1911's

How about a Ruger 1911 Commander? Think it might be a great 1911 for the price.

Have both and really can't point out a noticeable shooting difference. Everything else but the length and recoil spring is the same.

I say go for it. They are a lot of fun and will conceal better if you CCW.

DW would be my choice. IMO you pay a premium to have a pony rollmark

nothing noticeably different to me outside the obvious weight and dimensions from full size steel.. shoots very much like any other similar Colt of this construction quality.. recoil doesn't affect me nearly as much as some of these spec geeks that over analyze every .0001" of shot placement.. if it's reliable and manageable with adequate stopping power, I'll practice with it and carry it.. marksmanship under duress I feel depends much less on the weight and length of the gun vs the training and proficiency of the shooter.. we do though have to consider size and weight to maintain concealment so.....

Dan WessonValor Bobtail if you have a SSE slot open. If not, Dan Wesson CBob will do the job. I have a CBOB and absolutely love it. Feels really good if you have small/medium hands.

Another vote for the VBob. Shot it yesterday. It's a great shooter and easy to conceal. Heavy but, that what you get if want that kind of stopping power.

I have both Gov't and Commander length slides for my Gov't size double stack.
It takes only seconds to swap the tops and see how they shoot on the exact same frame.

My impressions:
The Commander top moves quicker from target to target.
It is easier to steer, get it moving and stop it.
This quickness is somewhat offset by the shorter sight radius that can take a bit longer to line up.
Recoil is slightly sharper and there is a bit more muzzle flip.

The Gov't top end "hangs" better and is more stable on target.
It's slower to get moving and slower to stop it.
Muzzle flip is less and the recoil impulse slower.
The longer sight radius is more forgiving.

Unfortunately in CA we pay a premium of about $500.00 for the CBOB. It's a great gun, I have one. But in CA they're an "about $1,100.00" gun being sold for $1,600.00 or so not because of quality but because of the roster and DW's keeping gthe gun available to us.

I liked my DW CBOB so much that I went out and bought the PM7. It was a few years back, each cost me $975.00. If paying for something that's not reflected in the product is an issue I'd say a DW CBOB in CA is to be avoided. Perhaps buying one used from out of state is a better option. They're on roster, a casual seller outside CA probably isn't aware of the premium.

Thanks for the input everyone. I know the Springfield RO and some of the Kimber's aren't technically commander sized, but does anyone recommend taking a look at them too?

Cbob is nice. I had one and sold it. Commander can be harder to keep on target due to shorter barrel and site radias. Fun to shoot. A 9mm commander is a very nice pistol but few offered. Cbob is around $1,500 on a good day, Colt XSE around $1,100. Both on roster so no hurry. Check out Grabagun. You can get the colt commander gi for less than $1k.

Dan Wesson CBob for all steel. And if you got a SSE slot left, how about a Springfield Armory Champion Operator Lightweight. It's an aluminum frame Commander size with a bull barrel like the TRP. They run about $900. The CBob is hard to beat though.

On the opposite end of the price spectrum rock island makes a 3.5" & a 4.25" 1911. I have a 3.5", nice pistol, works well. I got the "tactical" model for $400. Another member here replaced the front sight for me and I swapped the grips. Still don't know what the deal is wih the bushing less barrel (why better or worse?).
