Revolver Question

congrats. you picked a beauty and with the small amount of maintenance required, it should serve you well. i'm an all day sucker for a short barreled S&W revolver; just picked up a 640-1 .357 Magnum 2.125" pre-lock and brought it home yesterday.

Happy owner of 4 different 686's and I use lead away on all of them...cut a small piece off and just wipe where needed.

A few of us at work shoot at the 50 yard line with ours and it is a great time. I still haven't beaten the 65 year old smith god, that guy can shoot a double action revolver.

Another vote here for lead away cloth. I use them for my stainless and e-nickel wheelguns. Don't let the cloth touch blued guns as they will not be blue anymore.

Should I be worried about those "plasma cutting" on the top of the frame right above the forcing cone? Heard people were losing life on their revolver because of that... I am planning on making this my ccw...

You can shoot a snub nose revolver at 20 yards? Wow! You must be a really good shot!

I should probably note... can hit about 20-25 yards at a man-sized steel target while in SA.... Trigger is a really stupid clean break... Thought the sig was good, but it felt like a double-stage with the final break, while the revolver, it's like you sneeze on it and it will go off. And double action is quite fun to shoot. Still learning how to hold the trigger right before it goes off in DA though..

Nice pickup, that's a great gun.

Also this is a performance center, thus the adjustable sights, but I didn't mess with it, since it shot great right out of the box.

Pretty sure all 686s have adjustable sights.

I suggest this all the time, pick up Grant Cunningham's book on Revolvers, it is a great read chock full of everything anyone needs to know. Gripping, firing single and double action, loading, unloading, cleaning, everything. Grant is one of the very top revolver gunsmiths (probably THE top Python and Colt smith) in the country if not the world, and knows what he is talking about. You can get it on Amazon. Highest Jazman recommendation, and worth every penny paid!

That is a very nice gun. Nothing wrong with a snubnose, I shoot them all the time. I find they are just fine accuracy wise. It all depends on what you want to do with it. Shoot it , and enjoy it.

I also have another question... Read up .357 magnum is not a good idea for home defense. So far, shooting the 357, albeit did not shoot much of it due to costs. 38 special +p actually recoils like my 9mm sig... Being very short barrel, I did not notice the large flashes from the 38 or the 357... I am going to practice that later and turn off the lights to see if I can shoot without blinding myself. Had some reloads in 9mm and those made a lot of flash....

Also is lighter rounds for home defense worse than heavier gr bullets? I bought 357mag 125gr hornady critical defense... I know the need for higher velocities... but doesn't that lead to over-penetration? Thanks all.

You need higher velocities to make hollow points expand properly. I would shoot whats comfortable, but round up with the size.
