You can always get a used SA 1911 in the Marketplace; a Mil-Spec for $500-600 and a Loaded $700+. Not sure about the higher end versions though.

Might try looking at Para. Reasonably priced and are offering $100 rebate on quite a few models. I've picked up 2 so far and they seem to be good to go.

I've got a number of Sigs and love them to answer your question. Have a few SA as well can't go wrong with those either.

I've picked up a few RIAs for some people and were not that impressed with them. I guess for the price point they're not bad. The first one I got I sent back as it was a mess compared to a Taurus I kept so that should say something about the RIA condition. If looking for a low budget I would look at Citadel. I've picked up a couple and seem to be a notch above the RIA even though the same people make them?

Have a number out of your price range too and to be honest they all go bang each time I pull the trigger.

Colt quality has diminished greatly over the years.

Good luck OP, plenty of good info given so far. Remember it's your gun and you need to make the decision on what best fits your needs and budget.

Get to a few gun stores and handle as many as you can, see what really appeals to you the most.

OP, it'll be well worth the money to save for a $1k budget. Maybe to $1.5k if you really like the gun. No need to fork out $3k for a really nice 1911...

                        My recommendation as well.

Pretty much this. You seem to get a lot more for a $1000 1911 but that's about when I see diminishing returns start to sink in
