Extar EXP Brake Removal? **Updated**

Anyone remove one of these? I read you need to use heat? I was going to swap it for a Blackout FH to help midigate the blast. Anyone do this, and was it worth it?

Shot the Extar for the first time last week (indoor range where I do most of my shooting). It was like a flashbang going off in front of my face evertime I pulled the trigger. All the noise and flash to go with it. For my needs, this won't do.

I decided I definetly wanted a FH on this thing. I tried heat to loosen any compound that might be holding the comp. on, but that didn't work (I don't have the proper tool to remove it). I ended cutting it off with a dremel and eventually got it off without damaging the threads too much.

I screwed on the Original Blackout FH I had bought for it. Took it back to the range and put 30 rounds of American Eagle .223 through it without problems. A lot less flash and noise. It did have more recoil, but I felt the trade off was worth it. Your needs may vary.

I did start having failures to eject the spent case while feeding in the unfired case on magazine 4 and 5. Haven't diagnoised those issues yet.

I read that you want to take the barrel off and put it on a steel upper and then use a little heat.

Not sure if that's possible or not as I've never done it. I believe there is a thread on ar15.com a member has changed comps and hand guards maybe you can find it and pm him.

I communicated with the Mfg. about this a while back. They said the factory Compensator was not actually intended to be end user serviceable as function can be affected by back-pressure changes. I was also informed that a "reaction rod" type tool was the ONLY way to attempt to retain the Upper if I wanted to try it anyway. I did end up getting a Brownell's "reaction rod", and made two changes but ended up remounting the now slightly scarred original. A Battlecomp didn't work any better than the original but increased concussion to the shooter, and a Flaming Pig made it quite the muzzle flipper and no longer very fun or effective for quick double & triple taps. The original was just torqued really tight, but didn't show any signs of any kind of thread locker compound.

Edited to add:
I was just looking at mine, and it appears it would be flat impossible to remove the barrel without first removing Comp, so not too sure about that idea.

These pistols have a FIXED magazine. They can have all the evil feature they want. Including a threaded barrel.

Yes lol. Now you have to add Sig Brace because of A2 flash hider.

I'd the sig brace a tacticool fad ? One of the many things I like about the extar is the smaller size due to no buffer tube.

I have no desire to change the comp on my extar , I wouldn't mind changing the handguard.

I also bought it because it's so easy to shoot using a thumbs forward two handed grip.

I like the first one. I can't figure out what kind of handguard that is. Nothing in the thread about what brand

Agreed Agent88. Not only easy to shoot using a regular thumbs forward two handed grip, but from my experience, once I resisted urge to keep putting a hand on the heat guard, I finally learned how this pistol really shines. If used like a Pistol, pushed out in front of you, the felt concussion nearly goes away, the factory sights now work great, targets are acquired quicker, and rapid fire is more controllable. Mfg. claims it was designed to be most effectively used like a handgun, allowed to "hang" in front of the hand. I'm now convinced of that. Everyone that asks me about these I always say that if you're pretty good with a regular Pistol, shoot this the same way and you'll be great. I tried different muzzle devices, and had a red dot on it, now I'm back to the way it came out of the box. Seems to work the best for me all around just the way it is.
