Shooting off hand @25 yards

I understand that 25 yards isn't considered a long distance to most of you. But in my 10 yard world of range shooting it is.

I'm putting 10 rounds in a 8" circle. I'd like to tighten that up.

Does ammo quality start to come in to play at 25 yards?

Would I get tighter groups if I used better ammo?

I'm using lax 115gn now.

consistency is most important.

I wouldn't worry about "ammo" unless you are using a purpose built bulls eye wad gun.

You will get tighter groups with better ammo. However like Snoopy mentioned consistency is more important. Once you keep it within 4 inches at 25 yards then worry about ammo

Honest question: Is 4" the normal acceptable grouping size at 25 yards before ammo comes into play? How about at 10 yards?

my understanding of it (I'm hardly an expert, keep in mind...) if you're seeing a fairly even spread of the rounds on the target, it's you. If you're seeing a very narrow (left to right) but long (top to bottom) string of shots, it's the ammo.

It's all about site picture and letting the gun surprise you.

A lot pays a roll at 25 yards, but a good target shooter with a current production quality 1911 out of the box will shoot 2" and 3" at worst.

Though the firearm is important for bullseye shooting, 90%+ is the shooter. Sight picture, grip and trigger control is the name of the game.

Practice your trigger control with snap caps randomly placed in magazines. Then move onto grip and sight picture. Practice practice practice.

That said I actually group better with my 1911 at 25 yards than at 15 to 20 yards. I think it's a complex of mine. Then obviously better at >10 yards. But 25 yards is still a good distance for a handgun.

With my Glocks I'm lucky to hit paper at 25 using a 10x10" lol

My hand loads are noticeably better @25 than WWB, but WWB was good enough to be able to shoot 480 (out of 480) with a g34

Better ammo helps, but only once everything else is working well.
Shooting 480 is much easier with a .22 target pistol ;-)

With my tired eyes 25 yards is getting farther and farther. During my younger years I can hit a 6" diameter steel plate offhand with my 10.5" Ruger SBH 44 mag..

You can always use sandbags at 25yds with your WWB ammo to see how it does... if it groups great, then you know what your ammo can do.

No offense, but you're not a good shooter if this is the case.

But for handguns, the tradeoff between accuracy and speed is a pretty major issue. If you're talking about drawing and shooting a 25 yard target in one second, then yes, that is quite a challenge. But for slow fire, it's not difficult at all, provided you have the fundamentals down.

was just thinking this same thing. im a decent shot at 25yds, but it aint a walk in the park. i'll say that the biggest factor for me is sight radius. its so much easier to shoot at 25yds with a >4.5" barrel. shooting at that distance with my xd service, p938 or xds 3.0 is noticeably more challenging than with a full size CZ or 1911.

next most challenging thing for me at that distance? keeping my arms steady!! i typically shoot 25yds at the end of my sessions. a slow and steady string at 25yds, after at least an hour of shooting, becomes a battle of attrition!

I have a similar problem. 15 yards just feels like such a strange distance to my eyes. I don't recognize it as near nor far for some reason and I often have comparatively better groups at 20-25 yards.
