Need help with my Dan Wesson Valor

So I just got a Dan Wesson Valor in stainless and while I wait for Grab A Gun to ship it to my FFL and wait for 10 days in jail, I need a few things.

    1. is a stainless ambi safety and someone in LA/SFV to install it

    2. Nice grips. Maybe horn or something exotic since its my one and only 1911

    3. Mag well, something that'll look in tune with the rest of the gun. I'm open to having it welded in as long as someone local can do it.

    4. extra mags, maybe some 10 rounder's

that's a pretty strong list. 500 rounds of .45 is on the way already.
    I appreciate your help.

How about you leave it alone?

The Valor is a work of art the way it's done. Maybe the grips to better fit your taste but skip the ambi safety and magwell.

You probably should have bought a specialist.

      1. You could install the safety yourself. You could just watch a how to video and learn how to use a file.

      2. Ivory grips?

      3. If you can install a Mainspring housing, you can install a magwell ...

      4. Why do you want 10 rounders?

Your FFL should be able to do all that for you but I suggest you do it. Takes 5 minutes to strip a 1911 down to a bare frame and put it back. It's very easy and will show you how your pistol works. There are videos on YouTube.

As for 10 rounders why? It's a 1911, if you wanted 10 rounds of 45 you should have got a 227

Im lefty so I need the ambi. You're right I could certainly skip the magwell, but while I'm having the ambi installed might as well. the grips have to be dome if the ambi is.

I don't like 1911s with rails, or I would have bought the specialist out the gate.

I'll trade you safeties. When I pick up my Springfield Loaded I plan on changing it to a non-ambi.

its my first 1911, so I feel more comfortable leaving to someone with more experience. I would hate to mess it up due to inexperience. I read the ambi needs to be filed and fitted. Sounds more than I'm comfortable tackling.
Any brand of ambi you recommend?

figured never hurts to have more rounds. But if your thinking its pointless, I wont argue otherwise.

ivory is pricy at $300, horn is more manageable at $100. And I cant install a mainspring, cause I don't even know what it is. This is my first 1911

As far as grips are concerned, you can't beat Sarge's Grips.

Well you should go learn more about 1911's. If you are unwilling to learn the basics about it, your ownership of one could be a really rough road. It is a 100 year old design, it is not that complicated, well it is more complicated than a glock. A lot of the issues that arise can be fixed easily if you knew how. Installing a magwell only requires a screwdriver and a 1/8" punch unless some fitting is required.

I can't remember the store but there is a place in Burbank that used to be called King's gunworks but it has changed owners a few times. I am sure they can help you out. I don't care for ambi safeties, I turned mine into singles. You need to try a few of them out to figure out which one you like best. Some people like skinny ones, some like em wide, like their women.

If you ever compete with 1911's, you are typically limited to 8 rounds in the .45 ACP. If you get 10 round mags, you will be competing against the 9mm and the .40 users which could put you at a disatvantage, plus they stick out of the gun.

What are you going to do with it?

If it's just a range toy, you don't need a magwell. Put 500 rds through it before changing grips.

If it's for defensive purposes as well, then learn the platform. Run a training class with it. Get the magwell later.

The thumb safety is a legitimate issue. Have this installed by a competent 'smith: http://shopwilsoncombat.com/Ambidext...ctinfo/192SBP/

It's just a range toy. Thanks for the link. That looks like what I need. I just need a competent smith to put it on.

I'm all for learning how to take it apart and such, but not all at once and certainly don't want to do something stupid and damage it from the get go.

Calm your tits, look my Lambo still has the stock wheels. I really just want the ambi safety and will need new grips becasue of them. No need to throw a hissy fit, considering it MY toy.

Totally agree with you, it is yours and you get to do what you want with it.

I do get CK_32's point though.

As a Dan Wesson owner myself (1911 and revolver), I know how well they are made and I too get a bit of a heartache when reading that someone that does not seem knowledgeable is going to potentially gut it. Unless you want to turn it into a competition race gun, I would highly recommend to keep it stock for a while (except for the safety and grips since you are a lefty) and get accustomed to it before you go into any more dramatic changes.

I would also recommend as it was mentioned in an earlier post to study the platform. There are some really good sites put out by really knowledgeable people and some pretty good Youtube videos as well (along with quite a few videos that are going to make you wonder how you can get the time you wasted watching them back )

You obviously have a great taste since you picked a DW so I am confident you will do well!

Some pics would be welcomed too!
