        For shooting paper,the least expensive rounds you can find from a reputable source. That is most often 230gr reloads from your local range. For defense, use any factory ammo.
        The market is inundated with super duper hollow points and zombie killing rounds. But believe me just any factory fmj .45 acp out of your DW is more than adequate to stop intruders/assailants.

          Any cheap brass ammo preferably in the 230gr range.

          SD depending on the gun - HST, Ranger-T, Golden Saber, Hydra Shok, PowerBall... All regular non +P. I can't shoot a darn with +P.

            Range = 230 grain RN, home made reloads

            HD = Winchester PDX1 230 grain JHP

              For range use I use either CCI Blazer or Tula.

              For defense I use Speer Gold Dots 230gr. Really any HP load from a reputable company is going to work fine.

                SD = HST 230 JHP (non +P)

                  Handloads

                  200/230 grain plated RN (Ranier)
                  5.6 g/5.0 g HP-38 or W231
                  Mixed Brass
                  WIN WLP primer
                  1.260 OAL

                  Factory ammo for practice is whatever is on sale, but I rarely buy ammo these days unless for SD/Carry.

                    Many people, including myself, choose the standard pressure. The HSTs seem to be very good at expanding under normal pressures in 4"+ guns. For very short barrels I might choose the +P, but am a believer that .45 simply doesn't need high pressure rounds to perform, and that they put undue stress on the firearm.
                    It was just an old plywood boat, with a '75 Johnson, with electric choke. A young boy, two hands on the wheel, I can't replace the way it made me feel.

                        yeah, I know. what is this factory ammo everyone keeps talking about

                        most modern SD ammo is pretty good. it's such a competitive market that enough R&D has gone into every round, I'd feel comfortable with whatever shoots most reliably. always good to keep some factory SD ammo on hand for normal (er um, legal considerations) times, but I have a good stash of 200gr XTP's over 9.5 gr AA #5 which is for other situations!!

Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

                              I like 5.1g of SOLO 1000 behind a 230g LRN whenever I am testing out a new .45 ...

                                I shoot Federal AE45 at the range if I can keep my brass.

                                These are full power ball ammo that would likely over penetrate in a tactical event.

                                HST 230 +p would be very good if you don't have a twitch.

                                I have shot nearly a case total of p and +p and the difference is not significant to me.

                                I have Underwood 45Super 230 XTP, for my SD load for my little Glock 36, which run just subsonic indoors - where I'm likely to use them.

                                Underwood Ammo has flat rate shipping on a wide selection of premium ammunition. Shop today for specialized self-defense and hunting ammo and more

                                The Gold Dots, which they also load, peel back too much at that speed, so the XTP, which sets up better, will likely penetrate less - not like a 230 at 1050 is not going to penetrate enough.
