    38 Super? put em up!

Been looking all over for a 1911 in 38 super. Ran across a couple here and there but always when I don't have the $$$ or the gun is beat to heck. Well, today was a good day, I found one! Well, actually I found TWO Rock Island GI models, consecutive serial numbers, so you know I just had to pick them up!

Extra mags, grips, ambi safeties, grip safeties and hammers are on order, and when they get here I'll be taking them to a Smith for good night sights to be installed.

    Today was a good day!

    Let's see your 38 supers!

I owned one in the early 90's: a Colt Combat Commander 70 series in matte nickel. Beautiful pistol! Would not hit the side of a barn no matter the load. Replaced the original barrel with a Bar-Sto barrel that headspaced on the case mouth. It shot a bit better but my trusted/extensively revamped $150 AMT Hardballer shot much better.

If you want a hot 1911 .38 caliber semi-auto, on par with a .357 (which the Super is/has been touted to be the equal of), just go with the new Coonan .357 (not quite) 1911. It is a bit heavier than a .38 Super 1911 but with the myriad different .357 loads available on the market, it's a no-brainer. Wish I had one! Unless one reloads, there is a lack of commercial .38 Super load variations on the market and they ain't cheap.

Your guns are beautiful and, as a sequentially serial marked pair, don't shoot them and save them for a day when you can turn a profit on them.

Aw heck, I shot em both as soon as I got home. They are surprisingly accurate, function flawlessly and the fixed GI sights were just about dead on. You know I had to to shoot them both at the same time, just for *****s and giggles.. lol... too much fun.

I've had a Taurus PT 38 super for many years and I know how difficult it can be at times to find ammo, I buy it whenever I see it. I've got several thousand rounds stashed and was fortunate enough to get 10, 50 round boxes today when I bought the pistols.

CavTrooper, my RIA .38 started out just like yours. Here's a photo of what it looks like now after a few mods. Added Ed Brown beavertail, combat safety, and trigger and C&S hammer and sear kit. Pistol has also be refinished in blue.

Dual wielding! Hope you've been well Jorge -

My old Colt lighweight Commander - It was originally in 38 super then I found an entire 9mm upper for her - So she does double duty - It has a bunch of parts on there when I got her - This is my very first hand gun - Oh 1983 was that long ago -

            With 9mm upper -

I had an opportunity to pick up a combat commander in 38 super, pics looked good, sn checked out, but when I saw it in person it was pitted all to hell and ran like crap. Dude still wanted 900 because it was sooo rare! Needless to say, I passed.

That is really high for a beater -

I paid a whopping 200 for this one and I thought that was high then - A friend carried it when he used to work in drive-in theatres - Thus the high wear marks on the alum frame -

The 38 shoots quite snappy out of the alum frame - The 9mm is quite soft -

You can convert your to 9mm quite easily - A barrel and mag -

LOL - I did it for the much cheaper ammo -

For a period of time 38 super was nowhere around then for more than twice the amount of 9mm -

I also have a Gov in 9mm - Superb in soft shooting -

I stacked deep in the 9mm ammo -

congrats, especially with consecutive serial numbers. i've been wanting an older Sig Sauer P220 .38 Super for the longest time.

My first handgun was a Colt Combat commander in .38 super. It was well used when I bought it. The finish was well worn and the slide was as loose as an 80 year old hooker but she shot straight when I sold her. I would not hesitate to pick up a new version.
