    Is this right

I am thinking of selling my hand gun (usp45) To my Cousin. The problem is I know for a fact he will keep it loaded and unsecure, and he has two kids 16 and 10. Is it right for me to sell this gun to him knowing that it will be kept like this?

Right now he has only a 410 gauge for home defence. And i'm sure he will get a new gun sooner or later, and i need the money.

The two kids i have watched grow up and would hate to see anything bad happen to them. Whether it be from A unsecure handgun or in A home defence situation with a single shot 410.

As long as the kids won't get hold of the gun, there's no big deal. Some kids can be trusted around guns.

My brother and I grew up around guns, some loaded some not, and neither of us got into any trouble...

The kids are old enough, spend a little time and educate them. In fact, take them out to shoot!

Loaded and unsecured mixed with kids equals stupid. His kids may be fully aware of firearms and their destructive nature but the kids friends may not. He is still liable if any kid gets hurt do to his negligence.

10 and 16 they should be old enough to be around firearms
that all depends on his parenting though

The best thing to do is to take the kids to the range and teach them the gun safety, shooting and responsibility. I taught all my 3 kids since they were very young, 5 or 6 yrs old. They are high teens now.

I still take them to shooting ranges occassionally. They love to go to the range and go out to eat after. They all have their own guns, of course in the safe. They are not curious about guns anymore. They don't even look at my guns even if guns are around. I don't have any problem with the guns in the house.

Sell the gun here instead, and let your cousin make his own (possibly dumb) choices, on his own.

If you really need the cash, just list the gun here and it'll probably sell quickly.

If you know he will keep the gun loaded and unlocked then don't sell him the gun. I presume you ask the question because it is a concern, rightly so. Whether you need the money or not isn't the point - you can always sell the gun to someone else instead.

If your cousin buys a handgun from someone else, keeps it loaded & unlocked and one of the kids is injured as a result, that is his responsibility and you have no part in it. Free will and a clear conscience - a wonderful combination.

Don't sell it to him. Take his kids to the range. Teach them gun safety and the fine sport of shooting, but don't sell him the gun. If he wants a gun for self defense let him buy his own.
The fact that you posted and asked already means that you have a moral delema about the situation.
Do you really want to be the guy who knowingly sold gun to a guy who won't be responsible with it and let one of the kids shoot themselves with it cause its not locked up?? -maybe its me, but I wouldn't want that hanging over my shoulders.

That's an accident waiting to happen. There is no way he or his kids can control the friends. Even if the kids are up to speed with firearms, it only takes one to go snooping and find the weapon.

I didnt ask him, but I know he will. Hes the type to keep it under a pillow or a cusion while on the couch. I have seen this when I lived with them a few years back. He had a AD with a .22 cause he forgot it was loaded. Shot right through the kids room.

Sounds like you need to take your cousin out to the range and teach him gun safety, not necessarily in that order. When you're satisfied that he'll handle it responsibly, then think about selling him a gun. Not before.

irresponsible people and firearms do not mix, its nice that he's interested in home defense but not being responsible with something that is as potentially dangerous as a firearm is just sickening. A criminal who invades a home and is shot due to a vigilant law abiding citizen is one thing but anyone who is injured due to negligence on the part of the gun owner is another altogether.

Based on the posts it sounds like he shouldn't have a gun at all - any chance he's interested in buying a handgun from you because he would be otherwise not able to buy one from an FFL?
