Best .22 handgun

Had a coyote almost kill my dog the other day and came to the realization that I should have a small .22 handgun ready for situations like that. Plus, I want to plink with the kids with it. What do you guys recommend?

Ruger Mark II, III, and 22/45.
Mostly the same firearms but all work very well.

Browning Buck Mark for a semiautomatic or a single action Ruger Single Six for a revolver. The Single Six comes with two cylinders, one for 22WMR, and one for 22 short, long, and long rifle (22LR) ammo, giving you maximum ammo flexibility. Both are on the California Roster.

While I'm also jumping on the Browning Buckmark bandwagon as far as a high quality .22LR pistol goes, it's not exactly small or light for carry. Additionally I'm not inclined to recommend a .22 for defensive use, even against smaller predators like coyote, due to their low power and general unreliability out of a semi-auto platform. Besides, not every predator you might encounter walks on four legs these days. ;-)

How about the Browning Buckmark for plinking with the kids and something smaller in size/weight and larger in caliber for pest control?

Not bragging, but I have a Buck Mark, M&P 22, Mk III 22-45, Mk II, 617 4", and a Single Six. I give the nod to my 617, followed by the M&P 22. YMMV.

I love my ruger 22/45 target. (polymer version with bull barrel) It's awesome, no jams. Only complaint is I wish I had more 22lr ammo.
