Glock VS M&P Recoil

I have a M&P 9 that I bought new in 12/2012. I have put probably 500-750 rounds through it and thought it felt pretty standard for a 9mm. Then today I went to the range with a friend and his friend from work. I shot his friends G26 G3 and it seemed so much softer shooting than the M&P. I have a Glock 21 and 30 so I am familiar with the mechanics of the pistol. The only thing I can think of is his gun has 7,000 rounds through it. Does having a higher round count "break in" the pistol more? I feel crazy because in theory the full size gun should feel softer shooting but it didn't. Someone enlighten me!

My G26 felt awesome from shot #1 onwards... IMHO it felt like it had almost no recoil at all.

If you're impressed with the Glock 26, be sure to compare a Glock 17 to the 26. If you think a 26 is smooth you'll be amazed by the 17. Glock's fit my hands good and I shoot them very well. My 26 and 19 are utterly reliable and durable, I shoot them good too, so I love them. Every time I shoot my Glock 17, I feel like a kid shooting a 10/22 for the first time, it's incredibly soft shooting, accurate and bring me the most joy to shoot. For that reason to me the Glock 17 is the all around best 9mm of all time.

hmm thats odd, i felt that the g 26 had more recoil than my M&P9, ( i had no upgrades on it) and in general any subcompact has had a always more recoil than their fullsize compadres, i have noticed that there is a less felt recoil on the gen 4s to the gen 3s

That's not the case with the 26. The 3rd and 4th gen 26's both use a duel recoil spring. Other then the fact that the back strap can be changed to better suit the shooters hand size, which could possibly lend it's self to a lighter recoil perception, otherwise when it comes to the recoil of a 3rd gen compared to the 4th gen 26 there's no difference in regards to recoil.

Could this be an ammo difference? I always thought my M&P was a soft shooter.

Not quite the same comparison but I have a G22 and an M&P40c, the M&P is definitely snappier than my G22. I had a G17 and the difference in recoil between the G17 and G22 was negligible, confirmed by 4 different people that fired both back to back using WWB ammo. I gave the G17 to my daughter.

I second that feeling about the G17 being the best 9mm. Although I do think that my M&P full sized 9mm has less felt recoil between the two. But if choosing only one 9mm full sized gun, I'll take a gen3 G17 every time.

Ammo was different. I was shooting Fed 115gr and he was shooting 124gr reloads he loads himself. Maybe they were a bit underpowered?

Also it's interesting to know the G3 G26 has a dual recoil spring. At 10 yards I had a group that was pretty tight, about the size of a soda can and I'm just not getting that with my M&P. I did have new trijicon sights put on and have been shooting well left since. I think I'll drift the sight and try again.

Well said! I agree.

m&p9 should be compared to a 17. 17 is waaaay softer than the 26, and way more accurate past 10-yards.

17 is the perfection that started the revolution. Still Yet to be surpassed in its' category.

I prefer the S@W. For what ever it means. I don't own either. Put either in my hand and I'll be happy. The only guns I don't like to shoot are single actions. And if that is all there was I'll shoot them.

Factory bulk ammo has wide variances from one brand to another. For example, Blazer Brass and Federal 115gr only have 323 ft.lbs. at the muzzle, whereas Sellier & Bellot 115 gr. has 418 ft.lbs. at the muzzle. That's a huge difference in felt recoil. WWB 115 gr has 362 ft.lbs. at the muzzle.

Those 124gr reloads may have been pretty weak.

I have some .40 handloads that shoot softer than 9mm. Handloads can't be used to compare against another gun shooting factory stuff.
