    Right........LOL

I have noticed 45 will knock steel over better than 9mm......

But, I do agree. Use 9mm for more practice. More practice is always good.

In regards to combat and my personal opinion:

9mm is never better than .45 except when you have magazine capacity well over 10+. The entire concept is that you sacrifice the stopping power "per round" in exchange for more chances to wound your enemy. I believe the logic is very similar to that of the 5.56. Good at wounding.. not so much at killing.

edit: please note that 1911 is best (obviously) but i have no problems using a 9mm with a nice big ol' magazine.

The financial pain will be a lot less with a 9mm than a .45. I am picking up 9mm reloads for roughly .19 a round for FMJ range ammo. The same company (http://freedommunitions.com) sells FMJ reloads for .31 a round.

And really the HD rounds are so good today that if you hit a BG twice center mass he's going down no matter if it's 9mm, .40 or .45.

Obviously just my opinion and YMMV.
This. Either round will get the job done. And getting up to speed and proficient will be cheaper with the 9. Plus, less recoil means faster target reacquisition. And finally, give serious consideration to the 34. It weighs hardly any more than the 17 and it has more distance between the sights.
