Interested in getting a Glock, 9mm or .45?

I'm interested in buying a Glock, and I'm looking primarily at either 9mm or .45; so the two Glocks I'm looking at are the 17 and 21SF. I hate to spark this debate again, but it'll help me make my decision. The Glock will be primarily for home defense.

I know that the ammo will be cheaper for the 9mm, but should I really consider against the 9mm for concerns about "not enough stopping power"?

I'd go with the .45 caliber if its your first glock. No regrets when I did just that...

"Stopping power" is a moot point for a handgun anyway. Pick the one you can shot accurately. Having said that, I have two HD guns. One is .45, the other is 9mm.

Same here! One of each, I'd say my pride and joy is the .45 though.

Me too. I switch between my G17 and 1911, soon will have a G21 for HD. However, I have my 870 behind the door..

Never shot a Glock in 9mm, but I love my 21 and 30.

Here's my take on it. You're going to need to train on a regular basis which means putting a few hundred rounds (if not a few thousand) every month down the pipe at a range, doing drills, etc.

The financial pain will be a lot less with a 9mm than a .45. I am picking up 9mm reloads for roughly .19 a round for FMJ range ammo. The same company (http://freedommunitions.com) sells FMJ reloads for .31 a round.

And really the HD rounds are so good today that if you hit a BG twice center mass he's going down no matter if it's 9mm, .40 or .45.

Obviously just my opinion and YMMV.

Trout, yes, I was thinking right along the same lines as you in terms of cost of the ammo.

The 10 rnd California 9mm Glock mags suck.

If I was in the market I'de go for the G20 10mm with a .40 and .357 conversion.

3 calibers with just barrel changes.

I'd rather not be wincing every time I pull the trigger at the range (due to the cost).

Not true if you replace the followers in them. It's a known problem and Glock sends out replacement followers for free.

I replaced the 2183 followers with 9mm3 followers a month ago. Just to be sure, I switched the 9mm3 with the 9mm6 ones today.

I have a G19, an ODG G21sf and G30. They're all great. I bought the 21sf as part of a package deal and really had no intention of keeping it. Damned if I didn't fall in love. It's my favorite shooter of the 3. It now wears a set of night sights and a Streamlight THL and sleeps next to me at night. I think you know what I'd recommend but I'll take it a step further, the price difference in ammo is not that significant. Go for the big bore!

Yeah, as a G19 owner, I'll have to do the same. Haven't yet though. Only hung up once so far.

Did Glock send you the 9mm6s? Or did you have to find those on your own?

I have a G17 and really enjoy shooting it. You cannot go wrong with a 17 or 19 for your first Glock. I leave .45 for my 1911s.
