They are all Blue Steel Colt's model number O1991AR. The difference is the engraving and not the actual finish (Blue Steel).

I'm confused about these "A" stamp models. Other than the SKU how are they different from their non-A counterparts? My local 07 FFL, who's performing an SAE on a non-A 686 plus for me as we speak, told me he's yet to see one with the A stamp and doesn't expect to any time soon

California is mostly desert. If you have guns that are FDE, they will very likely get lost if you drop them on the ground, this means that babies can find the guns, since they are close to the ground and you are not. Since FDE is also the color of Gerber's Mashed Carrots and Pea Slurry, the baby is likely to pick it up and may accidentally pull the trigger and kill a bunny or worse. With Black and OD, it's pretty obvious, even to old shooter's eyes, where the gun is and we can quickly retrieve the gun before the wily baby can get it.

A new letter designates a change in material or design from the previous version. Where a semi-auto would be taken off the roster and then required to re-register with a magazine disconnect, LCI, and microstamping a revolver just needs to be re-registered with an A, B, C, etc. designation.

Will these guns infact "not make the cut" and be illegal to bring to cali?

I'm surprised no one noted that the 6 inch model 617 .22 made it back on the list too.

The roster doesn't make it illegal to bring a non-roster gun into the state. It makes it illegal for a dealer to sell it to you (or handle an interstate transfer). Moving into the state with a non-roster gun is perfectly legal. Acquiring one from an out-of-state relative via intra-familial transfer is also legal (assuming you meet the intra-familial transfer requirements).
