New 1911 purchase :)

My first and only other 1911 I've owned was a Kimber Custom II that I purchased about 4 years ago. It shot nicely, but it frustrated me for more than a few reasons, so I ultimately sold it within a year. My biggest gripes were that regardless of the oil, or grease I had on the barrel, the damn barrel kept getting this light surface rust. This was happening even within my climate controlled safe. The other thing was that the controls were all MIM which I'm not a huge fan of. I did swap them out, but I would have preferred not having to pay extra to do so.

Yesterday while at Turners I was eyeballing a Colt 1911 contemplating giving 1911s another chance. The sales clerk who was very helpful steered me towards the SA 1911 Loaded (Parkerized). He also mentioned that right now with the purchase of a new SA pistol you can get an extra three mags from SA and all this for about $250-$300 less than the Colt I was eyeballing and it even came with night sights.

Long story short, I decided to purchase it. Since then I have made a purchase on Midway for some Nighthawk G10 Alien grips, Kimber MSH w/ extended magwell, Wilson Combat one piece guide rod, Wilson Combat shokbuff and 3 Wilson Combat magazines because I remember them being the best mags when I had my Kimber.

I just had to share, but from my reviews it sees that there is a lot of love for this gun out there and I am super stoked to have purchased another 1911.

Anybody have and love (or hate) this gun? I don't regret my purchase at all and am excited to be getting it before my big shooting trip in October.

Hmmm... upon typing that I realized that the mainspring housing and mag well I purchased may not actually work due to the Springfield locking system.... hopefully someone can provide some insight on that.

Congrats on the new purchase OP. Make sure to shoot the gun first before adding all the new stuff you bought for it. You want to be sure that it runs reliably when stock.

As far as the locking system, you are replacing the entire housing, so it does not matter. Hope you bought all the internals and pin as well, as the Springfield internal parts should just stay with their housing with their lock.

I work in the industry, I carry a Springfield 1911, I've owned 4 SA 1911s and presently own 3, including one Loaded. I always have said that I am not a SA nut, they just happen to make what I am looking for in a reasonably priced package so I've ended up buying 4. Maybe that makes me a Springfield nut? Either way, I have always been happy with SA and they always surprise me with how well they shoot. I think you made an excellent decision will love your gun.

Don't worry about the ILS, IIRC once you change out the MSH the entire unit is out and the rest of the pistol is unaffected.

So the guts from the SA MSH are proprietary to that locking system? If so I'll have to buy new guys for the MSH I purchased

Yes, the Springfield-Armory mainspring housing has the "ILS" parts in it and is proprietary to that MSH. Brownell's has a kit which should work with your Kimber MSH/magwell: http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...prod27082.aspx

The shock buffs may work OK in your gun but many folks will find difficulty in pulling the slide back, once locked back, or the slide not locking back due to the reduced travel. I don't find the buffs necessary at all and I'll change the recoil spring ~every 3,000 rounds. I'll notice my empty casings getting dented more or even stovepiping when I forget.

Also, your Springfield 1911 won't have a firing pin safety system, which some folks prefer not having, while most (but not all) Kimbers and Colts do have such a system. I prefer not having a firing pin safety system in my 1911 guns, although when I did have them they both worked fine.

My preferred guide-rod is the G.I. style, but a one piece full length would be my 2nd choice. I don't like how the Springfield 2-piece can unscrew at an inopportune time. I believe the Wilson FLGR also comes with its own plug so you'll have a nice set-up once you put it all together.
