I used to ride the slide lock also but a little training and the issue is no more. You dont have to use the slide release to reload, just put some man into it.

The XDs 45 is my EDC. I love this little gun.

I have the xds 3.3 in .45 and 9mm. Have not had any malfunctions. Very reliable, great recoil management and very accurate. Runs just like my other XDm's and XD's.
