    XD(S) Reliability

Considering using an SSE slot on the XD(S) 4.0 in 9mm. Not looking for comments on other pistol options, 4.0 vs 3.3, 9mm vs x...but specifically on the XD(S) pistols themselves - are you having any problems with reliability? I have read some comments that you need to use the slide release when reloading, that there are some break-in procedures, etc. Haven't had a chance to look at the manual so apologize if those would have been easily answered.

Also, one reason I've shied away from XD's in the past is the grip safety - I'd rather not have an external safety of any kind, and if I recall the early model slides would not move without the safety being depressed. I believe that is no longer the case. But I'd like to know if anyone has had problems with their grip safety, if you've had any problems with shooting from unconventional positions and not being able to activate the safety, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

I have the original XDS in. .45 and have never experienced any malfunctions at all. Using all sorts of different ammo through it. My old man had the 9mm and he has never had an issue, his is the original XDS

Over 20K in my 3.3 XDS. In the break in I did have 3 FTF but that was in the first 20Rds then never happened again

I have been around over 100,000 rounds fired from various XD's.
They are very reliable and accurate.
I have never seen any issue with the grip safety.
Being a 1911 guy, I really see no issues with a grip safety and, in fact, like the grip safety based on that if the firearm is not being held it can not fire, such as being dropped.
Even being a 1911 guy I would highly recommend the XD series.

              This doesn't help but I have 2 9mm in 3.3 and 3 45ACP in 3.3.

No, that helps! I was tryin to avoid the "why would you get 9mm" or "have you looked at the xxxx model instead." Any info on the reliability and function of the pistol design is relevant in my book.

Not really a "reliability test" but you get the idea.

My wife's XD 40 has never had any problems. And if it ever did, Springfield will take care of it. IMO the XD is one of the best pistols in our gun safe.

My concerns are that it's one more system that could be a failure point mechanically, and that in a SD situation where I might not have an optimal grip that it might not fire. My only experience with grip safeties is on the 1911, but the first dynamic class I took with my 1911, I ran into a situation where I reloaded and then leaned out from behind a barricade and couldn't immediately get the shot off because my grip had shifted enough to engage the safety.

Completely my fault, but certainly a probable situation under stress, and one where a Glock or M&P would have fired.

Thanks for the link. Interestingly, Rob's original review of the XD(S) wasn't glowing; he had some problems riding the slide stop with his grip and when he tried to do a similar reliability test with JHP, the first round hung up on the feed ramp. So while he still thought the pistol had promise, he wasn't endorsing it as top carry choice. He seems to be more excited about the newer gun.

i have had a few FTF, but it was all ammo related. hard primer cups might give you problems in the XDs 9mm, which I bought the ammo at a gun convention. I think it was LAX reloaded ammo.

I use handloads almost 99% of the time, and have not had a single issue with my handloads, but I use softer primer cups like CCI or Federal.

Every gun has an occasional bum feed or stovepipe, usually during break-in.
                            I have a 4" XD9 and a 5" XD45. All stock except for Talon grip wraps.
They just run and run. Commercial reloads & new ammo...no problems.
I'm planning on getting the 3" in 9mm to make it a happy family.

Laws against murder and attempted murder should have been the only gun control laws ever needed in America...

Agree. I run all my pistols for several hundred rounds before I even consider them for SD, and then run a couple hundred more with my intended SD load. I'm not going to discount any pistol that has a couple of FTF in the first box or two.
