PPS vs Shield
Tags: None -
I'll bite. I just picked up my Shield yesterday. I've had a PPS since 2010. I haven't had a chance to fire the Shield yet. Here are the exact words I emailed to a buddy of mine last night.
Overall profile on the S&W is a teeny, tiny bit smaller than the Walther PPS. If you line up the trigger guards, the barrel/slide might be about 1/8" shorter on the Shield. With the 8-round mags in both, the Walther's mag baseplate sticks out about 1/8" at the back and a little more at the front cause there's a lip for the finger rest. The rear of the slide on the Shield is a tiny bit shorter too, if you hold them and match up the tangs. Widths look identical. The Walther's slide is more tapered up top but the rest of the Shield is rounder. So the feel in your hand is very different on both, with a slight nod to the Shield for the roundness. As far as fit & finish, it's no contest, the PPS feels like it's much better constructed. But it also cost more... though the fact that my PPS came with night sights and a 3rd magazine kinda makes the price difference a wash. Oh, the PPS also has an accessory rail. -
Personally I like them both. I went with the Shield because the PPS wasn't available when I was in the market for one. While they are almost the same size, the Shield feels smaller and slightly easier to carry. For me it would come down to which feels better in your hand and which magazine release is easier for you.I'm a big old, bourbon-soaked cigar-huffing ***, as God in his infinite wisdom meant me to be. - Charlie Sheen.Comment

I shoot my shield well. But I'm a little curious to get a PPS and try it. What about actual firing PPS vs Shield? I can't imagine a small pistol being more accurate vs the Shield but could be wrong.Comment

This was helpful, thanks. When you get a chance to fire it can you please let me know how the PPS compares accuracy wise vs a Shield? ThanksI'll bite. I just picked up my Shield yesterday. I too looked into the PPS before I bought the Shield, like others. But, have you looked at the price of a PPS magazine? That and the fact that it's not particularly "better" than the Shield has deterred me from paying the extra coin to get one. Maybe I'll pick up a used one down the line.Comment

Sadly, I doubt I'll have time to head to the range for a couple of months. Too many commitments (weddings, family events, etc). I can say that purely based on dry firing, the Walther trigger is head & shoulders better. There's a good chance I'll end up putting an Apex sear in it next year so that'll change things up (I have them in both my full size M&Ps).Comment

That's a good point. I've only dry fired the Shield, but the trigger feels gritty as hell.Sadly, I doubt I'll have time to head to the range for a couple of months. That grit can be cleaned up in less than 10 minutes with some emery cloth. Just the trigger bar against the plunger on the slide. It doesn't lighten it, but it does get rid of the grit. I shoot with that trigger better than the Glock trigger so far.Comment

My Shield (no TS version) trigger was perfect out of the box. Some of the older ones are hit or miss, but all the new ones I've handled (10+) have been great.
I've never handled a cali one so can't speak to that.Comment

My Cali Shield is coming out of jail next Tuesday and I'm hitting the range on Wednesday. We'll see how she'll feel after a few hundred rounds.
My Glock 19 didn't really smooth out till 500 rounds or so.Comment
