    Smith & Wesson 581

    Anyone own one?
How do you like the fixed sites?
Are you able to shoot 38 special accurately or are you relegated to 357
What grain 357 do you shoot out of yours?

    Great find!

I had both versions - Only shot 38 out of both and enjoyed it - I liked the fixed or really no sights!

I used one for most of the time I spent at the Academy and in my early days as a deputy. It was accurate with both .38 and .357; accurate enough for me to take top shot in my class. I generally stuck with 158 grain loads, but that was because the Academy bulk purchased them. Later on, I used my agency's then-issued 110 grain .38 +P+ (Winchester, IIRC) with the same good accuracy. It was a very solid, reliable revolver and, of course, I wish I hadn't sold it.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

          Nice revolver.

those are interesting stocks. should have came with Magna PC from the factory. and those look to have Coke bottle style checkering.

an aspect of S&W revolvers I've always liked was that they had names- in this case Distinguished Service Magnum.

I just want to say that you have a nice revolver!

I like my 586 a lot and shoot .38 spl and .357 mag without any difference in accuracy.

                  Enjoy it!

OP.....Either keep those stocks on & shoot it or get some aftermarket grips.

                      Whatever feels best.

                      Congrats on a great revolver!

Is this gun a 581 no dash or a dash 1 or higher?
If it is a 581 no dash, all this guns were recalled by S&W for modifications so it would shoot magnum ammo without locking up. If it is a no dash, it should have a "M" stamped around the model number on the cylinder crane area, to show the modifications have been done.

Nice catch. Maybe the previous owner modded an early set of Cokes with the speedloader cutout?
