If you have a DA/SA handgun, you need to practice in DA. I always spend time shooting my Sig and my M9 in DA. Decocking should feel a natural as flicking the safety on a 1911.

Decocker Model - DA/SA Interpretation

In an LEO class I took, we were told to never cock the hammer, DA for the first shot. Decock when the threat is gone. This is also how the gun was designed. Consult your owners manual. In training we would fire from DA, then 2 shots SA and decock, repeated the process I don't know how many times. It becomes second nature with practice. Range time with the gun is your best bet. And.....take a class with your DA/SA gun.Comment

both scenarios the op cites are high adrenaline
why make a startle or a twitch likely to create unintended circumstances?
leave it in DA of course
SA is for when you "know" you are going to shoot...not at the range of course
no reason at all to go to SA when in a high stress situationComment

I dry fire the **** out the DA on my 226 and it has definitely made the pull much smoother and more natural. Like others here, my first round on a new mag is always DA. Practice makes perfect and it becomes second nature after a while.
It is after all, DA/SA for a reason and for me it is no better or worse than my Glock or my 1911. Three completely different safety systems all designed with a specific purpose in mind.**** your feelings!Comment

I am still a novice but until recently i shot better in DA than SA because it canceled out my flinch and forced me to slow down. I though i had patience until i finely developed real patience, funny how that works.Vive La Exile Machine!!

I only own DA/SA and probably will not own any other system. To the question, I'll be more comfortable and safer to put it in DA when investigating. There's not a lot of slack in SA and when everything is running high in real situation, it doesn't take much to make that hair trigger go bang!.Comment

When I first took my FNP-9 to the range, I was terrible with it in DA mode(It's my first handgun). For that & the next three or four range sessions I would de-cock & fire DA every single time except for the last magazine for the day. I like to still do at least one magazine of 10 in DA for every shot when I'm at the range.R.I.P. I practice DA on my P226 and plan to with my Walther P99 when I get it in 8 days. Nice thing about the P99 is it is striker fired, has a decocker and an Anti Stress trigger which cuts the pull distance in half when engaged.NRA Endowment Member

This is police administrator talk, big army training method. It does not apply to most experienced handgunner.Hi All,
I'm actually curious to find out what other people's interpretation is on how to properly use DA/SA in a situation in which you need to draw your weapon. Now, I'm already aware that DA is to allow the pistol to be carried on you in a much safer setting than SA. And I'm also already aware that in an immediate situation in which you draw your weapon and shoot, you will most likely shoot it in DA mode.
Assuming gun is stored with chamber empty. But for example; if you heard noises in your house in the middle of the night and then you pick up your weapon, do you leave it in DA and then investigate? Or do you switch it to SA?
1) Chamber a round
2) Engage safety if it's a HK USP/CZ 75/Taurus type, or hit decocker if it's a Sig type
1) Stay in DA or SA with safety onHow about in a situation in which you drew your gun at someone and have them held at gunpoint? Do you stay in DA or switch to SA?
2) Follow basic firearm rule number 3, don't touch the trigger
Finally, handgun skills are very perishable. Regular practice/training is needed.Comment

2 of my 3 are da/sa. And my nightstand has an empty chamber with full mags. I personally prefer it over a safety and always start my shooting sessions with the decocked da shot. I prefer it and want to get as proficient as possible with it. Next step is to take a course and/or action pistol matches.
I don't see te fuss really. If you like a certain manual of arms go with it and learn it. Lol.Originally posted by Jimi JahI punch paper only because it is illegal to punch people.Originally posted by elpaisa1I think flatulence is a more serious crime. I think it should be a misdemeanor with a 1000 dollar fine or 6 months of jail. It should be a felony if done near an open flame.

If you have a DA/SA like a CZ-75, you can put the safety on after you rack the slide and have it "cocked and locked" in SA. Take the safety off if you really have to shoot.==================

Remember to dial 1 before 911.
Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.
