High end 1911s worth it?

I currently own a springfield loaded and a kimber ultra cdp. I'm trying to buy as much as I can before the end of the year and I'm wondering how much better a higher end 1911 would be to shoot, having never shot one. With a budget of say 1.5-2k, would the upgrade be noticeable? Could I just have some work done on the SA instead down the road?

My groupings are definitely better with my Les Baer than with my Sig and 2k will land you a les baer.

Is a 3k+ 1911 worth it? No. I'm actually thinking about selling my Wilson because it doesn't do anything better than the les baer, other than look prettier.

For me, no, because my shooting skills have declined a lot since I was a competitive shooter in my teens and early 20s (I'm 50). I would not be able to shoot a custom or semi custom 1911 any better than my production pistols these days. But, for fit and finish and if I could take advantage of the increased accuracy, owning a few custom 1911s again would be nice.

Worth it?

I don't know if it is worth it. I recently bought a Les Baer Custom Carry and it is really nice. A beautiful gun. Then I found a used Ed Brown Special Forces right here on Calguns and the price was right so I bought that one too. Another beautiful gun that I love to just fondle and admire. But my oldest 1911 is a Kimber Eclipse Custom II and it is a very nice weapon also. Very tight fit and very accurate. Just as accurate as the Les Baer or Ed Brown. I know that there are a lot of complaints about Kimber 1911's, but mine is great. And everyone I know who has one, is perfectly happy with theirs as well. This leads me to believe that most Kimbers are very nice weapons, and the bad ones are few and far between.

But,........ I just got some back pay from my retirement pension, and sent in a fat check to George Talia of Gunslingers. I ordered a Nighthawk GRP in 10mm, and a Wilson Combat CQB in 45 acp. Both are in stock, but neither are on the roster, so I should be starting the SSE on one of them in a couple of weeks. Now I know that they won't shoot any better than my Kimber, but I just want them. Just to collect, fondle, admire, etc...So is it worth it to me? You bet it is. I may get a Guncrafter Industries 1911, and I sort of fancy an Ed Brown Kobra Carry as well. Time will tell.

The way I see it is that a gun being "worth it" depends a great deal on the person making the purchase. To me it is worth it.

i've had the privilege of having Mr. Bruce Gray build a pistol for me and my Dad. Its absolutely brilliant. fits my hand so nicely, so smooth to cycle, accurate and easy on the eye. I've come to cherish and enjoy that pistol so much over the years.

Pride of ownership, definitely. From a practical perspective, probably not. For the real high end professional shooters that are sponsored, sure, given that they not only shoot for free, but are paid to shoot. In my mind it is very hard to justify spending 2-3K on a firearm when you can buy high quality guns all day for under $1000.00. If owning a gun that is capably of shooting a 2 inch group vs a 4 inch group means that much to you, then go for it.

From a utility standpoint, probably not worth it. It will do just as well, maybe slightly better, than a tool that is cheaper.

But is it just a tool? You decide.

If you drive a Honda Accord, and contemplating on a Mercedes since you have the money for it, would you do upgrades on your Accord or get the Mercedes? I think you get my drift...

I've got a Dan Wesson CBOB. I can feel the difference in just about all respects compared to my lesser priced 1911 pistols. Can I shoot it better, not really but I am not a great shot. For me, going for a higher priced than the Dan Wesson would not bring ME any return, it certainly does for others. I have a Springfield Loaded in 9mm and the CBOB is better gun in than the Loaded. Was it worth the $600 difference - it is if you can afford to part with that money.

I really like my Ed Brown Kobra Carry, my wife has a Special Forces. I think its more shooter, than gun, but the gun can make-up for some of the shooters mistakes, even if its just mental/perceived/confidence related.

You can always look at the Springfield Custom shop price list and pick and chose on what to do with the loaded Springfield. I understand they do great work. Looking at the price list, you can have it be a TRP for 900
