Mags or reloads

Hey everyone,

My son just picked up a new Springfield Armory Loaded in 9mm. Sweet shooter

Twice during the first 100 rounds the slide would not got to full battery, it would stop short by about 1/8-1/4 inch. The first time my son cleared it and told me about it, the second time he called me over. I saw what he described so as I went to clear it by ejecting the mag first, the instance I pushed the button the slide went home. Both mags are factory and it happened to each mag just once.

Reloads are as follows
124 gr Montana Gold FMJ RN
4.2 grns Titegroup
Tulammo SPPs
Mixed brass, loaded to 1.132 OAL

Yes we cleaned and oiled it before going out.

So what do you suspect as the culprit?

New gun issues to be expected?
Mags?
Reloads?
???

try some metalform mags and make sure its nice and lubed up

ive only had fail to return to battery from crappy mags, but i guess it could be the ammo, but id probably try again w/ new mags first

I'm guessing you need to just "break it in" with factory ammo first before deciding if it's the gun or your reloads.

OAL may be a bit on the long side.
Field strip the pistol and take out the barrel. Drop a round into the barrel chamber and look at how far it goes in.
The base of the ammo should be flush or slightly bellow the the back (hood) of the barrel.
When it sticks out, the round is not sized small enough to completely fit into the chamber for firing. It causes and out of battery condition.

May just be some of the rounds out of the bunch you have.....

OAL of 1.120" for 124gr bullet using Titegroup- Nosler manual
other Lyman manual shows same or shorter OAL.

This is why it's best to use quality, full power, factory ammo when you're breaking in a new gun. Makes it easier to tell where your problems are coming from.

Also use a thumb over thumb grip when you're trying to diagnose a problem like this. In this manner you can be sure that the thumbs aren't contacting the slide and slowing it down. Even a little momentum off the slide on a full size 9mm 1911 can create a problem.

Try taking out the barrel and see if the reloads drop into the barrel all the way. I had a similar issue with my relads. I failed to crimp them enough.

Break it in more If it still fails to return to battery, maybe look at the extractor tension.

OAL looks okay. Do you crimp your bullet at the end or just seat it?

It's new and needs a little break in time. Sounds like it might be a combination of tight slide fit and sharp corners at the slide/disconnector interface.

Regarding crimping vs seating. I reload on a Lee Pro 1000 with a 3 stage setup so I am not aware that a crimp can be applied, just seat to OAL

Next week we can try some factory ammo and see how it goes

I had a 9mm loaded that was giving me issues using 10 round magazines, but they were nosediving. The 9 round magazines that came with the gun worked fine. I called Springfield, told them the situation, they asked me a bunch of questions, joked and scoffed about our gun laws, then proceeded to send me a label to ship the gun to them. They told me to send the mags I typically shoot with and two weeks later, they shipped the gun back to me with a fairly long list of things they did (including a little reforming of the barrel ramp and frame) and it works flawlessly now.

I guess the main point is, if you've already put a few hundred rounds through it, call Springfield. They'll take care of you. They even paid for shipping both ways in my situation.

Youre shooting reloads.. who knows.. in all likelihood, the combination of weak (under powered) ammo and the 1911 being new are contributions to the slide not going into full battery..

I'd not change or spend money on anything until you've shot it more.. The problem you describe tends to go away when parts are more worn..
