I'm fairly new to the gun scene and now that I'm turning 21, does anyone have any good ideas on a good 9mm to start off with? I wanted to a sig P228, but apparently I am told there is some type of freeze on productions and they are overly priced and I don't like the safety system on the glocks. Appreciate any comments.

P228
I'm a big fan of Sigs, I have 3 now. I just picked up a 228 last friday. It was no more expensive than any other Sig. It's true they're not being imported anymore, but they're still available.
If you read sigforum you'll read tales of people scouring pawn shops or luckily finding a NIB 228 covered in dust in the bottom of a dealer's safe. I didn't want to go on a treasure hunt so on my normal trip to Iron Sights I asked if they could find me a 228. They checked with their distributors and told me they could get one in a few days.
I'm still partial to my 229, though.Comment

I have always liked Ruger (here is one for $359) for affordability, I am sure I will get flamed for likening ruger they make reliable guns and stand behind them. That being said, I recommend against buying a "get my feet wet" gun. Do your research and get the one you like. I am partial to the sig 226 in .40 with the dak triggerLast edited by five.five-six; 05-31-2006, 6:39 PM.Comment

Go to Las Vegas (or maybe a range in LA?) and rent some different pistols at a range, THEN buy one that you like. IMHO its better to do that than buy a gun because it looks cool or someone else says its a good buy/shooter/etc...
If you're not dead-set on 9x19mm I would suggest a Makarov in 9x18mm, still fairly cheap to shoot and VERY robust. Good D/A trigger too.

Your choices are limited for the 1911, but that's my first vote.
Second would be a Hi-Power, though both will likely need work before you like em.Comment

In a similar situation (21, fairly new to handguns) I went with the SIG (a P229 9mm).
I liked the trigger (the DAK).
I liked the lack of external safeties.
I liked the use by law enforcement agencies worldwide.
I also liked the feel of the grip, the way it shot, recoil, concealment, weight, balance, etc.
Factory refurbs are inexpensive.
try http://www.ordnanceoutsellers.com/ i bought my first 9mm SIG from there. Best price i could find at the time.Last edited by cheezerman; 05-31-2006, 6:58 PM.Comment

Don't rule out the classic beretta 92f. I agree with the previous poster that says you should try different models out first. Find the one that fits you.
I didn't know this could be done going from a 9 to a 40. I've heard of going from a 40/357 to a 9. Do you have any references that cite this? I would be most interested.Originally posted by EBWhite...I would go with a XD9mm (you can get a 40cal barrel later for it)...
Thanks.Comment

There is the "baby eagle" which is a 9mm similar to the desert eagle. It's pretty small, it's usually cheap, and has a bunch of cool safety features (decocker and a few others). I've always wanted one, just haven't picked one up yet.
Good luck!"You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't wipe your friends on the couch"Comment
