Yeah, I know, it depends on the gun.

3k value it effects more but say its a used whatever for $1000ish with the sacred "about 500 rounds down the pipe"

On a stainless pistol, nothing. Flitz and Scotch Brite pad will remove it.

On a coated pistol frame, it would depend on the coating. For instance, if Cerakote, I could have the frame refinished for $60, so I would negotiate that price, plus the cost to ship, and so on. A Colt with factory bluing or another pistol with a proprietary coating, I'd reconsider the purchase altogether.

Too many variables, though. There's a few off-roster 1911's out there that I would buy no questions asked based on how scarce they are in California.

i really don't get why most peeps swing that slide stop pin into place; i have never done that at any time stripping a 1911...i pop it out, then pop it back in...

there is wear around the hole but never a swinging scratch...

Don't be afraid of a scratch on a gun. It shows that it actually gets used. You should see my competition guns...the finish is nearly worn off on the slide and the sides of the trigger guard. It looks awesome.

I suspect the idiot scratch is a function of how (some) people were taught how to reassemble a 1911.

I remember reading a post (can't remember if it was on Calguns or on another forum) where the poster was relating a story. The story was, he had brought his 1911 (which he was new to) to a range master / gunsmith to see why he was having some issues with it. The range master duly field strips it, can't find anything mechanically wrong with the gun itself, pronounces the magazines the problem, and duly reassembles the gun. While doing so, puts a strong idiot scratch on the gun. Owner is apoplectic, asks why the range guy did it, range guy shrugs shoulders, looking nonplussed, and replies "That's the way they taught us in the Army." as though the owner was crazy for questioning the wisdom of Uncle Sam's Gun Club.

Does the scratch affect performance? No.

Guns are for shooting. Guns better have scratches, and all sorts of other marks of use. Not abuse, but use. What's someone going to do, buy a gun, then show off the neat shiny thingy in a case? It ain't a Picasso. Holy crap. It's a freaking scratch.

If anyone says it's not easy to get it's a lie. They are very easy to put on, usually during assembly. Most guys say it's cake but then you see them sit there putting the 1911 together with a pin or a business card for 10 min. Springfield's are notorious for strong detent springs. Tip of a knife and taking my time I usually only put a 1/8" one on mine. But it's not too bad so I live with it. Part of the gun, some refuse to call it a flaw in design but in my book it is. But a cosmetic one nothing more.

For myself, since I don't buy the rare collectible 1911, the scratch doesn't bug me as it has no impact on the gun's shootability. Of course, if I can get a discount I won't refuse it, but otherwise its a tool to be used and tools get dings.

And some people want that $3k pistol to look the part too. That's like saying a scratch down the side of a Maserati is only cosmetic and wanting money off is just you being cheap or you can't afford it.

If your buying a $3k 1911 with a scratch that's not exactly looking the part. As for the car reference, if you have to buy one with a scratch to cut the price to own one, no IMO you can't afford it.

Normal wear or holster wear adds character and I don't mind that but the idiot scratch is a deal breaker for me. It would have to be priced very cheap for me to buy it.
