Generally I'd say it takes 10-20% of the value of whatever 1911 it's on away. Except for maybe a RIA. Those are cheap and can be excused as most buy those to learn on.

On a cheapy gun I'd forgive a little on the cost, about $50.

On a high end gun it would depend on how much it would cost to refinish it. At least $200+

Honestly if it has a scratch and it bothers you so much to have to ask, don't buy it or don't buy used. Not to mention you having to ask, not to be rude or jump to conclusions will probably end up putting one on your self anyways.

And if your asking to take $$ of a $3k pistol I'm assuming it's probably out of your price range anyways.

And some people want that $3k pistol to look the part too. That's like saying a scratch down the side of a Maserati is only cosmetic and wanting money off is just you being cheap or you can't afford it.

I have a great example of this. In 2011 I went to the Rock Island Auction and personally inspected this gun. It was in beautiful shape. It should be, it belonged to a well known collector who only had the best of the best.



At auction it sold for $16,000 not including commissions.

In 2013 the guy who bought it put it up for auction again. This time around it was sporting some fresh "IDIOT SCRATCHES".



Sure the scratches are not too deep, but still. Who put scratches on a $16,000 gun? Not only on the frame, but on the slide too! Sheesh!

With the new scratches it sold for $11,000. So that was a $5,000 idiot scratch! LOL.

oh yes one more thing -- on war collectibles (i.e. 1911s from WWI, WWII, etc) the idiot scratch is to be expected. Finding a war collectible without a scratch is very rare.

So in this case you should almost expect the scratch to be there, and then pay a premium of it isn't.

Really just curious about what others think. My 1911s are all without them and not likely to get them by my hand.
If I wanted a high end custom job and it was scratched, I don't think you could discount it enough for me. As much is how it shoots is how it looks.
For a beater or project gun I want something with miles on it. Honest holster wear and if that had the scratch, so be it.
Again, just wondering what others think.

Similar to 1911's without the idiot scratch, the value depends on how willing the seller and the buyer are to conduct a transaction, as well as the availability of the product. There is no set value on it.

But if I were to speculate, a used gun that is not rare would be around 80% of original brand new pricing and then take am additional 10% off for the idiot scratch.
