Was just at one FFL recently and my single shot upper was still there (after about a year of storage). Kudos to Ajax22 for helping us get single shot pistol barrels more than a year ago.

You can use a 16" upper for the DROS of your pistol. As you probably know, you should not purchase a pistol upper if you have a rifle lower b/c you will run the risk of constructive possesion of a short barreled rifle. Once you have the lower that was transferred as a single-shot pistol, you can possess the pistol upper.

I was hoping someone would post this.

Do NOT purchase an AR Pistol upper or barrel without already posessing an AR pistol lower, if you own any other AR rifles or receivers. This can get you in trouble with the Feds regardless of CA laws.

If you FFL is willing to order a pistol lower and have you assemble a single shot pistol before DROS, you should use a single shot upper with a 16+ long barrel.

The info in bold is wrong.

You cannot use your own parts to assemble a pistol at an FFL in CA.

The pistol must be imported into CA in the configuration, or the CA FFL must be an 07 manufacturer or better to assemble a stripped frame into a pistol before DROS, and mark the receiver according to BATF specifications with their info.

Another option is to send your parts to an out of state 07 FFL to be built as a single shot, then import to CA.

Again, if a FFL assembles a pistol from a stripped frame, then sells it, they must be an 07 manufacturer or better, and include all markings required by the BATF.

Even if you bring your parts in and assemble it before DROS, you are acting as an unpaid agent of the FFL in manufacturing the pistol.

Freakshow (an 07 FFL that does pistol builds for CA, and a member here) has hashed this out and given the relevant info in several of his posts. I suggest searching through his threads.

well I've built 3 ar pistols now.

2 were model 1 sales pistol kits that had assembled uppers. I installed the LPK and buffer tube on a mega machine pistol marked lower for both.

The third one I ran into a problem getting a pistol kit so it was built from a sbr with a mega machine pistol lower.

All three were registered as single shots and afterwards used 10 round magazines with a bullet button.

The two model 1's were 7.62mm and required a wolff + 15% hammer spring as I would get light strikes the barrels were 11.5in with wolf steel ammo.

          the 223 one is 9.5in.

The only advice I can give california users is if your going to get a longer barrel, go with a full rifle. Less hassle.

Also unless you are going to shoot from the hip get a longer pistol buffer for aiming.

You can use your own parts, I've seen quite a few pistols that had 16in CMMG uppers and striped down car buffer tubes for registration.

In southern california give chris at brightspot pawn in riverside and he can help you as he has many people go through the process legally.
