Oh and contrary to what other have written the 40 magazines take and feed 9mm flawlessly as well.

I just went with both. Seemed easier.

I love everything in 40. That being said my baby sister got one in 9. I shot it nlast week and I have to say it is sweet and probably a little easier for a newer shooter to shoot accurately.

I got both, it does not have much more recoil shooting the .40 when compared side by side shooting the 9mm, so buy both

9mm - why? Because you have more capacity. There is great ammo out there such as Golden Saber, HST and many more. You're not going to defend yourself anymore with the .40 than with the 9.

40 - less capacity and snappier...

At the end of the day, go with what gives you better shot placement. Personally, I don't own .40 only because i don't see the advantage, and plus I like keeping my ammo stock streamlined.

              HST

9 is fine. Or go with 40 and shoot both as suggested.
Lots of good options for 9, even with the short barrel.

                9mm all the way IMHO

40 is no more of a man stopper than 9mm...neither is 45. With modern JHP they all expand to around the same size, and get the same amount of penetration.

9mm you get 1 more round capacity, and it's a more mild recoiling round for faster and more accurate follow up shots.

I understand if you enjoy shooting 40 more than 9mm but a shield is a carry gun, i would select everything based on practicality and reliability etc. If it was a range gun and you like shooting 40 over 9mm then get the 40. It's the reason i have a bunch of .45s, but all my defensive weapons are 9mm.

Great ammo reviews. HSt ammo seems like a fine choice for Personal defense. Thanks for posting.

this may have been satirical... but if not... noisy? really?... in real world conditions, outdoors it's not significantly louder to be a bother... indoors, I hope you're using ear protection (I use plugs outdoors even)...

In either case - if noise is an issue - shotgun training must be a real problem

To the OP's question... as others have stated, 40 is snappier... and normally that's not much of a concern (imo) - but for CCW intent, quick follow-up shots are paramount and for most (myself included), 9mm is faster to get back on target... this is not to say that 40 is not manageable... I have a USPc 40 and M&P 40 and it's not hard to get quick shots off... but in a life threatening event, I'd be more comfortable with the recoil characteristics of the Shield's small frame and barrel in 9mm.

Stopping power is a non issue imho... but can be (and has been) debated for days (forever even).

to me it has less felt recoil than my M&P .40 compact

Well it does have dual recoil spring which the compact doesn't
