    ppt including gun lock

When you buy a new gun you have too purchase a gun lock unless the gun you buy includes a lock. If I do a PPT and the seller includes a lock when I purchase the gun am I good to go?

    Depends on the FFL.
If you have a safe, Just know your manufacturer and model number and you won't need a lock.

I have a safe and did that before, but I thought with handguns you still need a lock. I would like to be wrong about that though

Safe affidavit only applies to long guns.

If the seller provides a lock you're all set.

Most FFLs I've been to have said the lock MUST have come with the gun originally. IE: You cant provide a Colt lock with a Ruger gun for a PPT. Any truth to this or are they simply trying to get the buyer to purchase a lock?

You could have the seller provide a receipt for the lock and it should be fine. The FFL is selling you a lock that didn't originally come with the gun either. As long as the lock was purchased in the last 30 days then there shouldn't be an issue.

This. IIRC there is a federal law for handguns that says you have to have bought the lock in the last 30 days, and provide a receipt for it. The FFL is required to keep a copy of that receipt with the sale records.

So have the seller write up a separate receipt for the lock with brand name and model if you can find it on the lock, AND the date of the sale.

Wrong. The Safe affidavit can be used to fulfill California's requirements and then, any lock with or without a receipt (it can be an old lock you have laying around) can be brought into the shop to fulfill the Federal requirement. It just takes a FFL that actually understands the laws and is willing to not make a few bucks on the sale of a lock to do this. Unfortunately, many FFLs simplify things and require a lock to be purchased within the last 30 days to fulfill both requirements at the same time.

Varies from shop to shop unfortunately.

I just grab a lock from my pile of @#$#@$% gun locks (don't worry, I have a safe) and bring it in with a printed receipt of a "recent" lock purchase transaction and stores have never asked me to purchase a new lock from them.

Just did a PPT handgun purchase last week and brought a brand new lock w me still in plastic, not purchased in past 30 days, just one that came w one of my existing handguns I had bought, guy at LGS said had to be lock for that specific model of gun from seller so charged me 6 bucks for lock.

That will work for long guns, but not for hand guns in some cases.
