Some good basic info about checking out a used gun prior to purchase.

Read onlline reviews................personal reviews seem better, take someone knowledgeable with you to look at the gun, check I trader rating.....stay away if they have none, welcome to the dark side

I wouldn't say stay away if they have no I trader. Not everybody goes back and leaves good feedback or any feed back for that matter. But if they do have a higher I trader you can probably trust them a bit more.
Also if you don't feel like it's a good buy don't do it! Stick with your gut

I wouldn't buy used unless it was a rare gun that you couldn't find elsewhere. Given the prices in the marketplace, they are not that far off from new prices and sometimes are higher (e.g. Glock 19 for $1000 comes to mind). Plus you don't have to worry about flakes, liars, and those trying to pass off their problem guns onto you.
Tell us where you live and we can probably direct you to a good local dealer.Comment

I am so tired of reading that quote every time someone asks about buying a handgun. If he wanted a glock 19, he would buy a glock 19. Some people don't like them...
OP - The Beretta is a great gun. I haven't heard of very many issues with them, and if you can find one in your price range I would jump on it. They run between $500 and $575 new for the roster version, so I would try for $450-500 for one in good shape.I'm a big old, bourbon-soaked cigar-huffing ***, as God in his infinite wisdom meant me to be. - Charlie Sheen.Comment

He's a first time gun buyer. I'll bet that in a few years he'll have a G19 and it will be his favorite gun while the Beretta will be stuck in the safe or on the CG marketplace.
The first gun seems like such a heavy decision when treated like an appliance purchase. (Will this $500 washer last 10 years? Decent warranty?) Treat it like something with a 10% restocking fee since guns are simple and safe to sell. No worrying about ebay or craigslist!
I would recommend PPT:
- More selection, not tied to the Roster
- Lower prices
- No tax
- If it's not the 'right' gun, it can be sold again for the purchase price. Only loss is the DROS.
- No 30 day limitLast edited by sd_shooter; 05-13-2014, 9:09 AM.Comment

Those are a lot of the reasons I like to buy used too.

I have gotten some really good deals that way.

Except that sse guns require the 30 day waiting period while ppt you can do as many as you'd like, I think.Stay Low, Go Fast, Take ChancesComment

There are a few guns that a lot of shooters end up with with after a lot of buying/selling/trading. That's why the Glock 19 gets recommended so often followed by the Sig P226.
Start with the G19 and don't sell it no matter how bored you get and then save up to buy a Sig P226. Life is good and you wouldn't have lost $100-$200 per selling other model guns like the PX4.Comment
