Things I'm interested in tends towards gimmicks, which tends to make me less interested.
My son is going through this phase right now with the dslr I just bought him. All the gimmicks that make taking certain shots easy have convinced him that he can't make the shots without the (usually very expensive)gimmicks.
Fishing? Heck there are walls on sporting goods stores full of gimmicks that hook more fishermen than trout!
It is the same way with handguns (or practically any gun 'cept cap and ball maybe big maybe)
I've accompanied friends to a gun shop. They want a hand gun.
OK, buy a hand gun. And a cleaning kit with some patches oil and solvent. And ammunition. And targets. And eyes and ears. And a case with a lock for transporting as per State regs. OK I'll even up the ante by suggesting a Bore snake, a spare magazine or a speed loader, and after they've shot it for awhile maybe different grips might help. And a holster for hunting or CCW (if that's what's in the cards.)
And that's it unless reloading or competition come into the picture.
But read any gun magazine or go on line and its like, "you really got to get a..." everything from lights and lasers to magazine loaders to brass catchers and biometric lock boxes. Pistol rugs, pistol socks, pistol wipes, More cleaning products than imaginable and optics that will let you see what's for breakfast on the International Space Station even when the lights are off. Extended safeties, extended slide stops, extended magazines, extended magazine releases, extended barrels with muzzle breaks, and even bayonets.
The whole shooting industry is getting to be like Mattel selling to little girls wanting to play dress up Barbie.
You can turn your "doll" into a Commando Barbie, or a Police Barbie, or a Survival Barbie, or......?
I'm not knocking all the products out there (some actually very useful) and the people who've bought them (mea culpa!) but look it, no one starting out really needs anything other than the basics. Once they master the basics with their own hand gun they should know what they need and hopefully not waste time or money on what they don't.
Excuse me while I go file a patent for a gimmick that attaches a derringer to the muzzle end of a m-9 so if you run out of magazines you'll still have two shots. If Cabela's can sell enough of them I can send my boy off to college.
You've just got to get one of those---you know it!
