    $56.39 for PPT!?!

    So I go to a LGS to do a PPT for an XDs. We both fill out our paperwork, and he does all the DROS entry, and tells the seller they are done and can leave, which they do. Then he logs the gun and my info into their system.

    Then he tells me my total is $56.39! I already had $35 on the counter for the transfer.
    I told him it is $35 set by law by CA. He says they charge $19 for doing the paperwork! He told me they are "the cheapest in town"! I argued with him about for a few mins, but at this point the seller is gone, and I don't really want to mess with un-doing it all since it's off roster and the seller is gone.
    So the receipt says DROS $25 + transfer fee $29 + tax = $56.39

    Now I let it go for now, for my transfer. But when I pick it up I plan on making a point.

    Am I right that CA has a set fee of $35 for PPT? And why are they charging tax on a transfer, it isn't goods it's a service?
    I have done many other PPTs, and it was always $35

    So when I pick it up, I plan on making him give a refund on the extra, assuming I am right about the set fee. Or I will take this further and make some phone calls.

    Any paperwork I can bring into prove the $35 set price, and who can I call if they refuse to honor the $35?

    Bring paperwork, you can find the code section. Let them read it and ask nicely for a refund, because mistakes happen.

    Then tell the gun shop that if they don't refund the difference you will call the ca doj and let them know that the gun shop is breaking the law.

        Talk to the manager/owner. They have just violated the Penal Code

        Public Where do I find laws regarding the possession of firearms? I'm not sure whether I have a California record that would prevent me from owning/possessing a firearm. Is there a way to find out before I attempt to purchase one? What is the process for purchasing a firearm in California? How can I obtain a Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) license? Can I give a firearm to my adult child? Can he/she give it back to me later? Can I give a firearm to my spouse or registered domestic partner? Can he/she give it back to me later?

          From the Office of the Attorney General;

          ================================================== =

          What fees can I charge for handling a Private Party Transfer (PPT)?

          If the transaction is a PPT, in addition to the state fees, you may charge up to $10.00 or less per firearm for conducting the PPT. For example:

          For a PPT involving one or more handguns, the total allowable fees are $35.00 for the first handgun

              Get your gun in hand first before you do anything.

              After taking possession, then ask for a refund by showing the state code. Tell the clerk that you will contact DOJ for violating state law.

                Illegal. And that shop is going to get in trouble, keep the receipt and all paperwork. If they dont refund call cal doj and tell them the shop is profiting above and beyond what is prescribed in the law.

                God i wish the shop was Guns, Fishing, & More in Vacaville cause they suck and pull made up bs on people all the time.

                    While I cringe at the thought of going after the endangered species that is the gun shop as they are very important to our RKBA, I have little tolerance for businesses that take advantage of consumers in violation of what is very clear law.

                      Yet, might be a simple clerk misunderstanding.

                        Let me get this straight. We live in a state that is the most hostile to the 2A. The amount of laws this state has that violate the constitution are too numerous to list. This state is the very definition of criminal enterprise.

                        Then as soon as an FFL does something we don't like we whine to the very same state that treats us like criminals and enemies. And so now you whine for "justice" from doj?

                        Man, I've seen everything now.

                        They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

                          I do plan on waiting till I pick it up, just to be safe.

                          Thanks guys for giving me the PC links.

                          I don't think it was a misunderstanding, because I was very clear that it was set at $25 for DROS and $10 for transfer, that's when he said it was a fee for the time to do the paperwork. Also this was just an employee, but the owner was sitting at his desk about 8 feet away, I am sure he heard the situation. He didn't get up to set anything straight.
                          I will make a big stink about it after I pick it up. It's only $20, but it's the point that it's not right, and how many other ppl that don't know are getting ripped off.
                          Is there sales tax involved with PPT? I didn't think there was any since it is a service, and not goods.

                            I don't really want to call the DOJ, but they r ripping off the gun community. Many ppl probly don't know what it should cost.

                              What on earth are you talking about. The state is reaming us on just paying the $25 for DROS and we pay it because that's the law. We DROS because that's the law, we do SSE to follow the law. WE follow the laws because we are responsible law abiding citizens. The LGS made a mistake in charging a transfer fee for a PPT and they are breaking the law by doing so. If we play by the rules, we all should play by the rules.

                              Nobody is "running whining to the state", OP was charged too much. He's the only person in all of California paying more than $35 for PPT. Why should he suck that up. That's a box of ammo right there. Would you go into any store, hand the clerk $20 and walk away without getting anything for it? Probably not.
