    S&W 5906?

I recently shot my friend's 5906 (mid 1990's model) and I was very impressed with it. I have a 4506 and 4516. I would love to add a 5906 to that collection.

    - Please provide me your thoughts on the 5906.
    - What I should pay (CA value)?
    - Any common issues?

To make note, I love steel, tank-like handguns, so if your opinion is negative to the weight of the pistol, that won't bother me.

Ps. if you have one and want to dump it, please PM me

I had the .45 version of that gun, bought it off a calguners for 375 but that was a steal IMO. Nice gun, I ended up selling it though to buy something else.

Ah, another person that likes 3rd Gen S&W autoloaders! My bruddah!

            [Me: 5906/9mm, 915/9mm, 1006/10mm, and 2 of 4506/45acp (old 645-style trigger guards) ... on top of an M&P45]

Most all 3rd gen S&W autos are well-nigh indestructible. Plus if you run outta ammo they are good 'blunt instruments'.

There were a few bits of drama in certain limited 3rd gen guns chambered in 40S&W.

Massive quality increase - fit, finish, feed - after transition to 3rd gen (5906, 4506 etc) vs prior 1980s [British-owned] production 2nd gen guns (459/659, 645, etc.)

Accuracy is more than reasonable for self-defense though that statement is unfair since I haven't run 147gr 9mm match thru mine.

Sometimes triggers need to be 'cleaned up' a bit. S&W service will - last time I heard - for quite low cost, fix up/re-spring/replace worn parts your 3rd Gen autos.

Bonus points if your 5906 has the 'wing protected' adjustable sights.

Thanks the write up. I would love to get a 5906 and 1006. The 1006 pricing has gone way up.

My 4506, 4566, and 4006 are 3 of my favorites with the 66 at the top of the heap. I would guess a 5906 to fetch anywhere from 400-600 depending on condition. A little 3rd gen porn...

I have a 4006 and a 5906. The 5906 I believe is the BEST 9mm autoloader out there (except for the Hi-Power of course). There are a TON of them out on the market that were police trade ins. The newer rounded trigger guards are easier to find holsters for than the old style hooked style.

Mec-Gar makes mags for them still- the 10 rounders are pretty easy to find. Novak's still makes night sights for them as well.

The thing is a tank and will outlast you.

OnTarget at Laguna Niguel had one at $650. You can give them a call to see if they still have it.

I have a 1006 and 1066 and love them. http://www.bren-ten.com/website/id55.html has article on 10,000 round Torture of a 1006. Example of 3rd gen quality.

Nice write-up. I've owned my 5906 since '86. It was my first pistol purchase and is still in it's original configuration.

I have a 5903 (alloy frame) that I bought off my dad; it is fantastic gun.
