if you're a 1911 guy skip the m9/92fs and get another 1911 but in 9mm

the berettas are good pistols but too different from a 1911 for me personally...the WIDE grip, and the safety located on the slide and up fire/down decock-safe function are my biggest issues

The Berreta 92 with a hogue grip is an awesome plinket for me. I've never had any issues, using the cheapest 9mm ammo I can find. Its also pinpoint accurate with the long sight radius. Plus the fit, finish and style is up there with any pistol.

I can understand why people don't like it. It does have a large grip, but if you have large hands the grip is appreciated. The DA trigger is heavy, but just cock the hammer at the range. The safety is a bummer but I personally prefer a decoker/safety over a 1911 plain safety.

But if you want the best of everything get a USP haha.

Vz grips are thin. Make the 92's grip feel less thick. Put them on mine now the wife has claimed it as hers.

It depends on what you want to use it for, doesn't it?
If all you want is a new pistol, the M92 will provide the capability to shoot 9mm which in these days, of quite frankly, Byzantine ammo supply, might be a valuable asset.
OTOH spending your shooting time exclusively with the 1911 will allow you to fine hone your expertise with ol' slabsides and that's a very impressive goal.

The Beretta is - Well made, reliable, good sights, heft (solid), looks good and will last forever. If you change the hammer spring to a "D" spring, install a metal guide rod and slim grip panels it becomes an elegant shooter. No different than making custom changes to a 1911.

I have both, and really enjoy both.

My 1911 is kind of a one off as it is a long slide and a custom.

My m92fs is pretty much stock other than the grips and some low power springs that help with the dbl action trigger pull.

I find the 92fs every bit as good looking and actually better functioning (read reliable feed, return to battery, etc. without undue maintenance) than the 1911 I own.

I think you can get a quality Beretta for cheaper than an equally quality 1911.
I think a comparably machined, and finished 1911 will cost $1000 or more.
The RIA/Armscor 1911s, while working fine, are pretty workman like and not well finished. Just kind of rough in comparison to higher end 1911s or the Beretta for that matter.

Really, having both is ultimate, but I would probably get the Beretta first and save up and get a proper 1911 later

They are both great guns with great military lineage.
The Beretta will be cheaper and easier to shoot most likely. It's definitely thicker than a 1911, but it fits my hands very well.
It's a beautiful gun and an easy shooter.
I'd recommend the M9A1 with rail for added versatility.
They're different enough that there is no reason not to own both.

I got a few 1911s and a 226 but at some point thought about getting an M9. But compared to 226, I like m9s bore line which is comparable to 1911s.

Sounds like it will be more hers, than yours. With that in mind, find a smaller single stack magged 9mm or .380 (AKA: 9mm kurz, which is 9mm short in German).

If this is a "surprise" for her, it adds a high level of difficulty for you. How can you alone find a gun for her? I don't think you can!

I really think she will need to handle them and find the "one" she likes the fit and feel of. Most important for a petite female!

Perhaps you could get her to a range that has a large selection of these smaller handguns and have her shoot a few as rentals... then you'll know what SHE likes and is comfortable with!
