I cannot comment on how it compares to a Python as I have only shot a Python once (well, 6 times ). But if you are looking for a sweet shooter, that is more modern, then I would say that you found one. Based on its specs, it seems to be an awesome shooter. Again, this is based on my experience with similar revolvers from the same manufacturer.

I know some members have posted about their PC revolvers and hopefully they can chime in. I personally like PC revolvers a lot!

And hopefully someone with a Python and a PC can chime in as well. I would be curious to hear their perspective, too.

I have a 6" 686 no dash I bought new, as noted by others I've run many hundreds of rounds thru it with zero problems, very accurate. I have three Smiths in .357 a K,L & N frame the 686 is my favorite,

I have an 'older' 686-3 Competitor. Bought it new/old stock in 2005. Manufactured back in 1994 I believe, one of 400 for that year.

Have put about 20K down the tube without a hiccup. Highly accurate, very heavy, I have all of the weight loaded in mine and it has no cut outs to lighten it.

I shoot this gun most every weekend, only 38's though, it's only seen 10 357's in it's life. Extremely light recoil with target punching wadcutter loads.

If you find one it will not be cheap, they are in great demand. I get offers for mine from time to time.

Well, I'm hoping NEVER. I believe that with the light loads that I shoot, it will last until I can't shoot it any more....but you never know.

It may even be slightly more than 20K, my normal annual shooting puts me at close to 5K per annum. Had her for nine years....but not all years were full on 5K. So, yeah prolly more than 20K, just being conservative.

It is a very well taken care of revolver though, still looks fairly new. Clean after every range visit....except for the barrel. Why put more wear and tear on it?

S&W 686

I started with a 6" 686, traded for 2 1/2" 686, traded for 4" 686.
I still own the 4" 686, all are from the 90's and pre-lock.
IMO the best revolver for .357/.38.
Never had a problem with any of them, you just can't go wrong with a S&W 686.

^^^ Can't the OP use the sticky titled, "How To Import Off Roster S&W to California!! Instructions" ?

I know FFL Rob Blank in Milpitas (see sticky) and he is one Cool Cat. He'll help you do it. Now, I have not personally done this procedure, and I don't know the OP's proficiency on S&W revolvers...
But I'm no gunsmith by any stretch and I've taken the sideplates off both my 686 and 617s for spring swaps and light stoning. If you're careful, it's not a big deal (YMMV). Grab Jerry's DVD from Midway
