I'm thinking about getting a 357 revolver for target shooting. I don't know a lot about them but I've heard the 686 is pretty decent. Anyone have insite on this particular gun?

Awesome gun. Very versatile and accurate gun. My 4" 686+ was my 1st handgun I ever bought and it's the only gun that goes to EVERY range trip with me. I've put more rounds through it then any of my other guns and enjoy shooting it more then any of my handguns. My 686 will never go anywhere!

Just picked up a 686+ Pro series. I haven't been disappointed by any S&W wheelgun yet.

        Oh yeah....

And while you're at it, check out the 617 .22LR 10-shot. Superb understudy to the 686. Same weight, feel, grips, accessories,
and makes a superb steel challenge or falling plates gun in-between IDPA SSR and USPSA Revolver matches with your 686!

Cant go wrong with a 686, I also enjoy my GP100 very much.

If I could own only one... it would be the S&W 627 Performance Center.

My 2-3/8" 686 is my favorite gun. i dont think you can go wrong with any 686 or 586, but try to get a pre-lock if you can.

if theyre looking too pricey, look at rugers and taurus, but they wont be the same

Are you asking about a specific 686 model (i.e. Competitor if there is such one) or just the 686 series in general?

I can provide feedback on the 686 in general - it is one fine revolver and is supposedly the S&W version of the Python. Or at least some would claim so. It is well-balanced and can take .357mag easily. Some may think it is a bit bulky (especially compared to a K-frame) and the full lug does add weight. The pre-locks are in good/great demand and the new production ones are equally good (except some do not like the locks - I am okay with it). I have seen a few posts arguing that the 686-4 production is the best, but that has some subjectivity to it I think.

My 686 SSR (Pro Series) is my favorite revolver of all, hands down! And I do have pre-locks and some others...

You will more likely than not like the 686. Good luck!

I really like that one too.

First time I saw one at the local gun store I didn't know anything about it. I went back home and did a little research, went back the same day to purchase it and it was gone.

That's what I get for not impulse buying. Haven't seen one on the shelf since.

That happened to me, too. I wasn't sure that the SSR was worth the premium over the regular 686. Then I did some reading and came back to the store - it was gone! I swore to myself to pick up the next one I saw. And I did! It was a decision that I will not regret.

A few folks have shot it and respectfully offered to buy it or trade for something. My answer was a definite NO all the time.

Here's a pic (or it did not happen ):

Thanks. I found it at Guns Direct in Burbank back in July 2013. The first one I saw was at The Target Range in Van Nuys back in February 2013. Those were my only two sightings besides one that was for sale here but in Nor Cal.

For clarification this is the specific 686 I was looking at.

Well, well, well. Ain't that a fine looking revolver.

Strictly based on my experience with my 686 SSR, with my classic 686 that I foolishly sold and with a Performance Center revolver (and the one you are looking at is from the Performance Center), I would say it is a great revolver.

PC revolvers have a tuned trigger that makes DA shooting so smooth and fun. SA is SA, I do not feel any difference. That specific model has a rail to attach optics to so that's a neat feature. The grips are utilitarian and you have the option to swap them out to what you may like better should you so desire.

What else is holding you back from getting it? Or what other questions might you have?

                            Good luck! Get it!!!

I sold my pre 1980 Python and I'm wondering how this will compair. I'm not a collector and felt bad "wearing out" my Python when I shot it. So I'm looking for a sweet, more modern revolver.
