Well, if I were you and was limited on the funds, I would first do some more research on the gun that you really like and you have shot. I would then be spending some time on the for sale section of Cal guns and before you know it someone will be posting that gun that you want for a cheaper price.

S&W sigma is a very cheap gun, but do not be fooled by their price. I have one in 9mm and I have tried just about everything for it to break and the dang thing will not break and will fire each time I squeeze the trigger. Very accurate gun too.

One question for you. I have been meaning to go to the gun store at camp pendleton. Do you know if they charge sales tax on guns/ammo?

From what i heard from a fairly reliable source (my SNCOIC) they do not charge the tax! good deal!

It had a failure to fire problem when I first got it, so I sent it back to Smith. I got it back in less than one week! I has shot great since and my experience is like the Chief's; it shoots and shoots and shoots. There is a rebate going on too!

I'd also look at the M&P. I have one in .45 and it's a superb carry gun.

If your wife is gonna put some time in with ya at the range before you get deployed, and you want a gun that will eat anything, be dependable, even in-between long periods of cleaning, and remain reliable, be accurate, soft-shooting i.e. muzzle flip/recoil-wise, I would steer ya towards a Beretta Px4 9mm 10+1 or 14+1 depending on where you live. But it has one of the best NIB DA/SA triggers you'll find, along with a safety/decocker in one, that IF you do not want a safety, it can be converted easily, quickly, to a G-model decocker only..

The action on them is like butter, smooth, and easy, especially for the Mrs's.

It comes with 3 backstraps so you both can customize the grip, especially when you deploy and you can quickly change them to suit her grip better.

Also, one of, IF not, the easiest guns to disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble, out there, bar none..

9mm ammo is affordable, and has excellent JHP choices to offer for SD/HD needs..

Accurate, fast follow-up shots on target, is there, all the time, anytime, every-time..

NIB cost are from 450 - 500 bucks.. 3yr warranty


Rotating barrel helps absorb recoil while keeping the barrel aligned without any movement (no tilt-up load cycles).

If you can plan a trip down to SD, I would be more than happy to let you and your wife shoot the guns that I have to see what you like the most. I have two H&K USP .40's, 1 "Sigama" 9mm, 1 H&K P2000 9mm (That both you and your wife will love) and few high end 1911's. All you have to do is drive down here and bring ammo for the calibers that you want to shoot. Just let me know.

If you want it for home protection, get a wheelgun. In a high stress situation, if you have a failure to fire, stovepipe or forget how to use the safety, youn could die. With a DA revolver, these problems don't exist! If you feel you are going to NEED more than six rounds, you should either learn how to shoot or been smart enough to avoid the situation all together. Most gunfights either end after the first shot or no one gets hit. so, just learn to shoot and everything will be OK.

I go to BLM land here in San Diego so you don't have to worry about the range fees and you can bring the entire family. Wall Mart sells ammo at a very good price for the 9mm, .40 and .45.

what class should i take? I see youre in the Los angeles area. I go to Compton\south central every weekend. what range do you know of that has these classes of which you speak?

I was actually looking into a snub nose .357 mag later on down the road as a "put it on the nightstand before i go to sleep gun or an extra gun but right now im looking to get a non-revolver type pistol. very good point though..thx

Glad you're keeping an open mind. Oh, BTW, if you transfer out of the PRK you can get 17 round mags for the Sigma 9mm.
