    What do you recommend??

Hey all! So I will be getting a handgun pretty soon,my first handgun actually. I just wanted some input from you guys here at calguns. I thought i was pretty set on the glock 23 till i went to the range last week. I rented a ruger p94 .40 cal and only shot it twice it kept misfeeding like a mofo! granted these are rental guns(high life) and range supplied ammo. So i wasnt too discouraged by it even though i would've loved to shoot it way more. So i got a glock 22 next since i still had two full bags of ammo. On the first round fired the slide cut my thumb. im 6'3 205lbs i dont have baby hands and it felt like my hand was about to swallow up the glock. I have to say getting a sight picture was a breeze with the glock. recoil was ehh...i want my wife to be able to shoot it too for if she ever needs to defend herself when im deployed. she's a tough babe though my buddy who went to the range with me shot a HK USp 40.
That was a nice gun it was heavier but it felt good in my hands glock felt kinda toyish. i loved the front sight on the hk though the rear sights on the glock IMO were faster to line up. Bad thing about the HK is $$$$. I dont wanna break the bank on my first handgun. Glock is a lil better on price. I was looking at the guns at the base gun store and i saw a s&w sigma and it was cheap. but after doing online research i heard bad stuff bout it. then again some people buy cheap ammo and dont clean their guns so i'd still like to shoot it. so? any recommendations? my max amount is $600 preferably under. I dont want a 1911 every one and their mama has one

Other options in polymer guns under the $600 range, are the XD or the S&W MP, go try them out, find the one that feels bet in your hands.

The XD seems to be very popular right now.
I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

    and

If you're in a survival movie and the hot blond twists her ankle and can't walk, you damn well figure a way to carry her. If it's a dude, you shake his hand and say "best of luck".

yeah, I've been hearing alot about XD's. looks like another trip to IRON SIGHTS is in store for this week. thanx for the input i'll have to check it out.

oh yeah,i forgot to mention i', pretty much set on .40 s&w. just seems like a pretty good balance of power vs ammo price. 9mm just feels too anemic to me even though its been getting the job done for decades.

Take a class before you do anything else.

I did and it saved time and money.

An NRA Basic Firearms class. Since you've mentioned that this is going to be your first handgun, you should get to know the basics.

I took the Basic Firearms class at the Burbank Firing Line and it was awesome. They also have a wide range of guns to rent also. After taking the class, I signed up as a member and tried every gun they had; also some of my buddies' guns. One thing that I noticed when I brought my friends with me, they had VERY bad gun habits...no muzzle discipline, bad form, bad grip, etc.

So I shot a Glock 35 rental and after a couple of months...I bought one and saved $100 less if I were to buy it locally.

It's great to go shooting every week, but you may develope some bad habits if not professionally trained.

After taking the basic course, I signed up for other self-defense handgun classes by a former cop. I'm in advanced now and I have a purpose going to the range rather than just making holes.

Ask your local range if they offer some classes to help you hone in on your skills, and may assist more on your purchase.

No unfortunately I have not, since im only a huey\cobra mech i dont rate a pistol qual unless i was a crewchief or a SNCO of which im neither. But geez, ive shot a m16,m240,and m249 SAW and threw grenades. that's gotta count for something? Jk, i know pistol safety is different than the weapons above mentioned
