I'm interested in picking up my first .45. I've decided a single stack .45 would work best (I have really small hands). From my research it seems a 1911 or Sig P220 would be a good option. Any other suggestions? I still need to go shoot both but I'm leaning towards a Springfield loaded with the 1911. I generally prefer steel guns. I keep reading about "reliability" issues with the 1911 platform. Is this overblown on the internet? I don't mind spending a little more time to learn the gun if necessary, but I need to be able to trust it. This will mostly be a range gun/ hd but I am working on getting my CCW (Riverside County) and would carry it.

im a huge fan of the 1911, ive had 4(Rock Island gi, Rock Island tactical, Springfield MC Op, and the Springfield loaded), reliability issues are definitely over hyped by the internet. The current 1911 i have is a Springfield loaded it has about 800 rounds threw it, 300 by me and i have no issues its a great gun and would absolutely recommend one for someone looking for a good 1911. However, it would be a little rough for edc, it can definitely be done.Selling lots of Pistol brass, lots of 38 and 44 mag!

my first .45 was the Ruger SR45. Pretty cheap and pretty accurate. Doesn't fit the steel preference but no complaints over here.Comment

Pick up a used SA TRP or MC Operator for around $1,200.00
You'll be glad you bought a 1911 with all of the important upgrades installed at the factory instead of doing it yourself after.

There is truth to it. The thing is that there are dozens of companies that build "1911's". Remember when we say 1911, we mean a pretty specific blueprint for a gun. In theory, after over 100 years, the parts would be pretty standard, but there are so many parts manufacturers for 1911 parts that not everything fits well together. There are also many many magazine manufacturers. So getting a well put together 1911 and have it run with a particular brand of magazine is tougher than it looks and often people just buy whatever magazine they find because it says "1911 magazine" on it.
See, only Glock makes Glock pistols and Glock magazines ... this is why Glocks work with Glock mags .. one company makes them.
Yes, people will pipe in and say "Yeah, well it was good enough for my Grandpa in WWI/WWII" and "Then how come special forces use 1911s then?" ... Because those guns were under the care of taxpayer funded gunsmiths/armorers. Oh, do the Marines use 1911s? That's nice .... do you have an armorer taking care of your guns like they do? Is there a guy living in your safe whose job it is to make sure your 1911s work? Probably not.
1911 can be extremely reliable, but that is after you figure out which magazines work well with your particular make/model of 1911. And maybe you've had to polish this part or that or swap out something.
So yeah, there can be reliability issues with 1911s ... because "1911" actually refers to hundreds of makes/models from dozens or hundreds of manufacturers. And they use magazines made by dozens or hundreds of manufacturers too.==================

From the look of the trigger, the Sig P220 is a single AND double action whereas the 1911A1 clones are only single action.
This was a major issue back in Germany pre WW2, when Walther invented the single AND double action P38 9mm parabellum to supersede the single action Luger.
Single AND double action is better.

Sig P220.
Rugged and reliable. Better ergonomics than the 1911 (don't have to ride the thumb safety). No grip safety to fail to compress and cause the gun to not fire.My friends and family disavow all knowledge of my existence, let alone my opinions.Comment

im 5'6" 150 pounds
you have small hands im assuming your about my size
2 things come to mind right away IMO, from my own personal experience, and you need to rethink it a bit
1) you will NOT be able to conceal carry a 1911 MOST of the time
2) the glock 21SF is a super comfortable gun for us smaller guys but too big to carry
now i do love the 1911, but for a carry gun....your gonna need to be more realistic
in michigan i can only carry a mid to full sized handgun about 6 months out of the year. the rest of the time its a sig p238 .380
and with that said, i owned a glock 36 and really didnt like it all, i sold it and got the 21SF . the 36 was too big to carry (single stack...not too fat...just too big...poked out the back of my shirt) and too small to be fun to shoot
just my personal observations from what ive owned an carried on a daily basis

There are a lot of differences between different 1911's. I've shot glock 21, baer PII, Baer comanche, springfields, kimbers in .45. you can tell the difference with the Baer 1/2" compared to the rest (my personal so biased). If you can, shoot different guns you think you like.
