The Beretta Tomcat is DA/SA. Not sure how you feel about .32 ACP and blow back system. The S&W 360 is a little J frame revolver and it's DA/SA if you're into revolvers.

Didn't mean to offend! The SP101 in 327 used to be a $550 gun 1.5 years ago. Now, if you can find one, often sells for north of the $1000 mark. Perhaps not a unicorn, but not exactly easy to come by either.

Yeah, I see what you mean. It looks like most of the other .32 caliber pistols seem to be just as rare and almost as expensive. So it isn't as viable of an option as I thought.

You may also look of having a smith install a charging handle. something like this or some race guns have them. http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=44451.0

Look for a Beretta model 86 it's a older gun but it has a flip up barrel and you don't have to rake it!! It would work great for your wife if you can find one.. Hope this helps

Decided to do the really smart thing, sign her up for a handgun class at 2nd Amendment Guns in PD, then let her fire a few she finds interesting and THEN make a decision.

Another gun to consider is a Walther P1, especially if you can find one with the reinforcing hex cross piece. Fun to shoot and the slide is easy to manipulate. Stick with standard 9mm as +P can cause issues. These pop up on a semi regular basis in the marketplace usually for a decent price.
