Smith 642 pre-lock on list? UPDATE

Need some advice/help. I have checked the list, but am still not sure. I am looking for a pre-lock 642, if I find one out of state can I buy it and have it sent in to my FFL? TIA.

Update: NIB NO LOCK 642-1's for excellent price, see my post #22 on 8/05

As far as I am aware, no pre-lock is on the list of any sort.

Rats, afraid of that...I see some brand new pre-locks on Gunbroker, stating they are part of a limited new "batch" by S&W, and that they are 642-1 selling for like $420.00...642-1 is on the list but it's still confusing. Thanks rivvie...if anyone may know differently please speak up.

The "no lock" 642's are not "Pre-Locks" They are just plain 642-1's that were made without the lock and are perfectly legal for sale here. The lock has no bearing on whether the gun is on the list or not, it's completely driven by model number. The lock also has nothing to do with the drop test and is not a California requirement contrary to popular opinion.

jazman...from reading another forum, this new "batch" is a run of 4000 642's without the locks. I was interested in a 642, but like you was confused of the "-1" vs "-2" model designation.

          I found this on THR
          642 no dash = Not rated +P
642-1 = rated +P, no lock (some early production have no +P on barrel but all are rated +P)
          642-2 = rated +P, with lock
Can anyone confirm the above and edumacate me on the "-1" vs "-2"?

          Is "-1" pre-lock and "-2" with lock?

eta: just saw your reply 461...Thanks!

Thanks for the infomation, appreciate. I have to ask, as I am going to buy one, are you sure on this? Hate to have it come in only to not be able to pick it up...

I think there are actually a few models still on the list which existed in the pre-lock form.

Some of these include the 296, 317, 342, 610-3, 640-1, 642-1. You have to balance this with the exact barrel length to be sure, and I think for some models, ala 642-1, there may have existed both pre-lock and lock versions.

Of course with new models, you can't forget their new lock-free 40-1 model, so S&W may be wising up to customer demands by introducing more lock free models ... one can hope.

I was going to buy one myself and asked my dealer if he could order one and he had no issue with it at all. The gun is marked 642-1 on the frame. If you're worried, have your dealer do the order through Lipsey's or RSR and you'll not have to concern yourself with whether he'll accept it. Don't pay a premium for this gun as it's priced to the dealer at the exact same price as the lock version.

                  A quick Google found this:

I realize all the conflicting information regarding the run of 642's without IL, so I'll add mine! I e-mailed the COO of S&W last night encouraging them to expand this to other product lines, and received the following response this morning:

Thank you for taking time to write. We appreciate the feedback. The Model 642 is a special run only. We had some frame in our inventory that were the old style. We will continue to manufacture the revolver line with the internal lock.

                  Thank you
                  kf

                  FWIW!
So, looks like there's a little legal loophole in the old DOJ certguns list - there exist two models of the 642-1, some with and some without a lock. I bet you a dollar if you try and order one through your local dealer, you'll get the new model with a lock...

                    642-1

I just purchased two of the new Non-Internal Lock S & W Model 642-1's. I purchased one from a gun dealer in AZ. and I had my local gun shop order one from RSR. One came in on Tuesday amd the other one should be here on Monday. These handguns look great with no internal lock. According to S & W, they had a bunch of frames that they are using up. Once they are gone, they claim they will not be making any more Non-IL 642's. I would get one while you can.

                      RABULL,
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the no-lock 642 from RSR? I called them and they would only give me the MSRP which is $561. That's the same MSRP price for a 642 with the lock.

BTW, Davidson's is having a sale of the 642's with the lock so I'm wondering how much of a price difference there will be. Thanks.

Top Gun Supply has them for $419 here

Guns for sale. Gun Parts for Sig Sauer, Heckler & Koch, AR-15, Glock, 1911 parts. Your top gun supply superstore!

I've seen one of their posts n another forum where they say that won't ship this to Cali, but I would imagine they could be convinced otherwise once the list showing 642-1 is shown to them. Their website even lists them as 642-1s.

Any Cal Gun vendors in the Bay Area want to jump in here and let us know how much they can get these for us for? I am thinking there is interest from more folks than just me on these, what do you say vendors? I'd much rather keep the business in the "family" if I can.
