Correct, he lives in Oregon. The point is, if you want one of these your dealer, FFL, whatever, has to order it from RSR I guess, I don't know anything about RSR.

You know guys, I wasn't planning on getting one of these until this thread was started. I always knew someday I'd want one ("one" being anything from a 340PD to a 642 and anything in between
) if and when I got a CCW in this state and county. But you know, my juices got flowing with the chance to get a new no-lock that won't be possible in a year.
I had to go down to Tabor's in San Bruno today to get a firing pin nose assembled on a hammer by Frank, and had planned on asking him if he'd call RSR and see about one of these. Lo and behold, guess what he has sitting on his shelf! Yup, this specific 642-1 we're talking about at a price in line with the posts in this thread (don't forget sales tax tho, *sigh*). You know I just had to buy it, otherwise I woulda kicked myself later for not doing it.
As mentioned, this thing is assembled using the steel barrel (as well as a steel yoke with the cylinder), the rest being the Airlight frame. And lemme tell you what - it feels really nice in your hand. I have a full Airlight|Ti (337-1) and keep thinking it's a toy, the amenities on this hybrid 642-1 give it a little heft and put some weight on the nose - I can't wait to see what she's like to shoot in 10d.
Frank mentioned he was going to call RSR in a day or two to order another one, so I mentioned I'd let y'all know. If you're serious about it give his shop a call and spend some money at your local gun shop. 650-589-0505

So the whole point of not having the internal lock is ... so you guys can shoot somebody without having to look for the key on your key ring and then unlock the 642?
I saw the 642 on the S&W site and then looked it up on Gallery of Guns. Then checked here. Good info, guys! Thanks.
EDIT: But jazman, didn't John G tell us during the UT CCW class that at least a .40 or bigger caliber will drop an attacker sooner than something smaller? Still IIRC you had some decent groupings on your silhouette.x

This has been covered in detail on many forums, it has to do with the possibility (and reality) of the lock failing. On these lightweights it seems to be even more prone. No lock = no chance of failure, period.
Two words: mozambique drill. I don't care who you are, you catch a .22LR in the face your a** is stopping....at least a .40 or bigger caliber will drop an attacker sooner than something smaller? ...Comment

Picked mine up tonight, he said he has 2 in stock now (saw one on the shelf). Someone else also bought one after I did.
So far I've found out that 30-40 rounds of 158 +P ammo hurts, I forget how much punishment you take shooting one of these little things. The first 10 or 15 shots were dang good (I mean at 7yds for such a brutal recoil, dang good) but by 40 I wasn't doing so hot.
