    Free locks from Sheriff Dept?

I am about to go pick up my pistol tomorrow and my FFL asked me to go to the Sheriff Dept to get a free gun lock before heading over. Is it true that I can get a free lock from the Sheriff Dept?

Many LE agencies participate in Project Childsafe and give out free locks

You think you know, but you have no idea.

Don't pistols come with a cable lock anyway? All four of mine did.

Some FFLs require a receipt that the lock was acquired in the last 30 days prior to gun purchase. I've gotten free locks before but since the police department does not give receipts some FFLs would make me buy another lock.

My FFL, who is also a good friend, didn't make me go buy gun locks for him to DROS handguns, the State of California did. His hands are tied, he has to include copies of the receipts along with all the other paperwork now. I am in the same boat as the rest of you, a bunch of gun new/old locks laying in a pile, useless without a current receipt.

Even if your gun comes with a lock? Like I said, all four of mine came with the lock in the case.

The gun I am picking up is a used one and it doesn't come with a lock, unfortunately ...

Its not an FFL policy, it is state law that the lock must be appropriated withing the 30 day window.

When you get a Project Childsafe lock from a LEA ask them to date and sign the back of a business card. Generally that is enough proof but many times FFL's will still not take them.

Not all come with locks and not all locks are approved.

As of January 1, 2002, no firearm may be sold, transferred, or manufactured within California unless that firearm is accompanied by a DOJ-approved firearms safety device (California Penal Code section 23620, et seq).

the police department i got my lock from refused to sign anything or even stamp the date on a business card. my ffl said he can sell and refund me a lock if i bring an old one in but all mine came with one so i didnt have to go through that process.

You've never owned a business or have been responsible for profit have you?

Some FFL's will allow you to make a handwritten receipt, dated within 30 days of DROS & use your "existing" lock. Many of us have a pile of locks & a safe. SD Sheriffs do lock giveaways all the time.

Buy a lock at walmart. Show the receipt to the ffl. Return the lock.

I don't see why going down to staples and buying a receipt pad for a few bucks and you physically writing a receipt wouldn't work
