Then would it be wise to master both? I'm really not a fan of getting then mixed up in an adrenaline infused defensive situation. It would really suck to grab my 1911 during a robbery thinking it is my da P226.

I don't think it is that difficult to become comfortable with both styles of guns. You just need to be sure which one you have on your nightstand/quick access safe.

That is the reason why my 1911's stay locked in the big safe at night and I'll do HD usually with a Glock or M&P, unless it's the rare case where I forgot to clean them after a range day. It that's the case, I'll go with a .357 revolver or my CZ 75BD.

Sig came out with Sig p226 SAO I belive (1911 style), but very expensive.
Look into Sig DAK trigger as well. I am also not a big fan of DA/SA so that is why I only have striker fire pistol (glock, xds, shield, etc..)

I personally don't like external safeties on my defensive guns. So I would likely not carry a 1911. In a high stress situation, all I want to have to worry about is pointing and shooting. I'd be much more comfortable carrying a Glock, M&P, or CZ 75 Compact at half cock.

That being said, for someone who has a lot of experience carrying and training with 1911's, flicking off the safety is second nature for them. It would likely be a lot easier for someone to go from an external safety to not having one, than vice versa.

If you commit yourself to mastering the SA/DA trigger, you won't have any problems getting used to it.

Increase your skill. The DA/SA is not hard to learn, mastering it will make a good 1911 trigger feel like cheating.

I used to think the same thing until I shot IDPA for the first time this past weekend using my 1911. They mandate that your thumb safety is always ON until the gun is pointing down range and you about to engage a target. The first stage I had to think about it but by the end of the day, that safety was going on and off as a reflex.

Find the gun you want to shoot and practice enough with it. When you are in an extremely stressful situation, you will fall back to what is programed into your brain (muscle memory). If your pistol has the safety on, and you never practice shooting with it on...then you are going to run into some problems....if you train with it ON you will instinctively flick it off as you bring the gun up in that stressful situation.

I have/had the Sig P220 & P220 Carry in SAO... not as nice as the 1911, but same function with the safety, and you can carry cocked/loaded. My P220 Carry has the Grays work & it's a super nice clean pull.

I agree 100%. For me, I likely won't practice enough with my 1911's as I will with my G19, M&P40, or CZ 75BD due to a few factors.

My M&P40 is the gun I shoot the best, so it is my primary HD sidearm. My G19 is the gun I carry out of state. It is for those 2 reasons I shoot them the most, followed by my CZ 75BD, which I shoot a lot because it is my favorite gun. I've never had a single malfunction with any ammo in those 3 guns.

I don't have anything against a 1911 for HD now that I have found rounds that cycle 100% with mine (230gr Golden Sabers), it's just that I've been shooting Glocks, DA revolvers and SA/DA pistols for 15 years now and have just recently gotten into 1911's in the last 2 years.

Been shooting da/sa for years. Practice practice practice, that being said my new 226 elite dark with srt, is a winner.
