lol really?? I think this has been covered a million times on the internet. A 1911 is a thing of beauty, A collectible, a soft shooter. A glock is a tool.

The OP did not state what the primary use this second .45 would be in his world. If the Glock21sf is his primary self defense gun, and feels that it is a totally reliable pistol, then buy a second one. Should your primary fail you won't skip a beat and will be totally familiar with it. Go to a shooting class, take both in case of failure. If one is down for repair or upgrade to a gunsmith, you've got it's twin brother to take its place.

If the Glock21 is not his primary self defense firearm then I'll vote for a 1911.

lol really? You are aware that the 1911 saw us through two world wars and a few others right?
They are both whatever you want them to be, tool or collectible.

Glocks are no collectibles. My ww2 colt 1911 is.

Glock 18 would be a nice collectible.

That's a great point, purpose of use. My G19 is my HD pistol - I live in an apartment complex where I'm more comfortable with 9mm (a separate debate entirely) - and my beloved G21 is my gotowar/SHTF device, should that ever be necessary which I highly doubt but hey, always prepare. And while your point is spot-on - from a practical sense a second G21 would be the smart move - I kinda want to treat myself with a cool range toy, something different from what I currently have, but a range toy that if need be can snap into its critical role as a lifesaving tool without missing a beat. I love firing the 1911 but I'm quite concerned about its "finickiness," or so I keep reading about. Hence, why I was looking at the Sig. Decocker, no decoker, doesn't matter to me either way. I like em both functionally.

I think I've got to go rent these pistols some more before I decide. Thanks for all the excellent feedback guys, much food for thought.

Very weird that you should mention that. I actually had a dream the other night that I was in a mall and they had Glock 18s for sale, propped up in display cases amongst assortments of diamond jewelry. It was beautiful.

One of first handguns I ever bought was a S&W 1911. I had never been shooting at the time, complete newb, and always thought my first purchase would be a Glock 17 or Glock 21. Went to LGS w a buddy who loved 1911's and convinced me to go 1911- just picked the S&W cause it was there.

For the first couple weeks I had it before taking it to the range I finally started getting addicted to gun forums, reading a lot, etc and thought I had made a HUGE mistake. Assumed from posts I read 1911 would be finicky w ammo and why didn't I just keep it simple and go w the Glock.

Well 5 years and many thousands of rounds later, I trust my life with my SW1911 and out of all my handguns use it as my bedside HD go to. It has never had one ftf w ALL different types of ammo including HP's so I have it loaded w Speer Gold Dot 230 gr and like said trust my life with it. Love the feel even w big hands and the weight, just feels like natural extension of my hand and accurate as heck too. I'm no expert since although I plan on getting more, the SW is still my only 1911, but seems that most 1911's in the SW price range ($750-$950) such as the Sig1911's, etc debunk the myth that 1911's can be finicky. I read post after post of people trusting their lives with their 1911's right out of the box these days.
Not bashing Glock here as I own a Glock 30sf and love it, but don't rule out 1911 cause think will be finicky- there are plenty of great out of the box options out there that need no fine tuning.

I like the look and feel of the P220 as well though, probably will pick one up one of these days.

Out of the box the SIG 220 will tend to be more reliable and require less care than a 1911. It will also be just as accurate...without any tuning.

There are certain issues with a limited number of 220 models.
                      1. Early 220s won't feed certain reloaded ammo with sharp shouldered bullets (H&G 68)...it has to do with the 220 originally being designed as a 9mm pistol
                      2. Early 220s with stainless steel slides and internal extractors can have feeding issues...it is because they didn't optimize the extractor location when they went to the milled slide. There is an aftermarket fix.

I think the 220 is a great gun and have carried it as a duty gun and for CCW...as well as using it as a teaching gun

I own Glocks, Sigs and a Colt 1911. Every gun collection should have a Colt 1911. No clones please. You want the real thing baby! If it ain't got a pony, it's a baloney. After saying that, I'm not sure I would pass an opportunity of obtaining a Sig P220 or P226.

Let me list a few of the good stuff:
                        * A P220 is easier to field strip (me personally)
                        * Both are fun accurate shooters.
                        * A Colt 1911 is easier to completely strip (me personally)
                        * The Colt 1911 has been widely copied (for good reason)
                        * A Colt 1911 is made in America and designed by an American firearms designer. (da man)
                        * A Colt 1911 was used in two world wars. (Lots of history)
                        * A Colt 1911 is an American Icon of automatic pistols

                        Good Luck!

                          I really like both.

The 1911's I have are extremely reliable. As is the 220. Both are very accurate. Both eat basically any ammo I have sent down the pipe.

I like shooting either one equally.

The only issue I have is with the 220. I don't have small hands, but I find the DA trigger pull to be almost too long for my trigger finger. That's it.

If I get the chance to carry here in Santa Clara county, I will put both on my list of weapons to carry.

                          Good luck.

I own both a W. German p220 and a DW V-bob and I love them both. Both have been 100% reliable with my ****ty reloads for countless thousands of rounds. That being said, if I had to choose one it would be my DW by far. The quality is much better, it has a much lower bore axis, it is not as blocky, and it is not DA/SA.

Good luck, both are excellent platforms in any caliber.

I have both. Both are great guns. The most important thing to remember is that not all 1911 are equal and that trigger setup are completely different. If I can only pick one out of these two, I'd keep my 1911 but I also wouldn't mind suggesting the p220 or any SIG to someone else. The SIG was and still is crafted beautifully but I personally dont like DA/SA triggers

Both are very reliable and accurate. And who ever says a 1911 is not dependable, is very miss informed. For starters, it is wrong to say that all 1911 are the same by different manufactures. Where as sig is the only one who makes the 220. Had said that, and I do have a P220 tactical as well as several 1911's from an array of manufactures and they all have their pluses & minuses. My personal recommendation for a reasonable priced 1911 for dependability, accuracy, and functionality, I'd also have to go with sig. And here is why. I have a scorpion commander that has never been cleaned, it has been dropped, kicked, dragged through mud, as well as dragged over dirt & gravel all while attached to a lanyard and the damn thing won't die! One day it will, just not today! So that in itself sold me on sig's 1911's. Hopes this helps.
