Since I didn't want to leave anything to chance, I got a battery operated motion detector light that mounts w/velcro right above the Gunvault. One swipe of the hand above the safe and I've got lights-on the finger pad of the safe to make sure I am pressing the right buttons. (In blind testing, I wasn't consistent). It automatically goes off in either 30-60 seconds. You can find them at OSH, Home Depot or Lowes.

It's a good idea... have you tried it in the dark after your eyes have become accustomed to the dark?

I can't help but think it would screw your night vision you have accumulated being asleep.

Reeds also has an excellent NRA pistol safety class. Very very good instruction. Teaches safety and fundamentals of stance, grip, trigger control etc. also combines range time with a variety of guns. It's nice to have another person teach when there's couples.

+1 on the Fort Knox box. A little pricey but has no batteries to worry about and comes with their lifetime warranty. It's also CA DOJ approved.

I've been using my for two years. Room enough for two handguns, a flashlight, and spare mags.

Similar concept already in use with much more cost efficient "Magnet Polarity Key" that can be incorporated in any wood work (Bed, Nightstand, Dresser, Coffee Table, End Table, Etc..) and built to meet your needs.

Yes, I've done a few times. I was concerned about it being too bright too. Fortunately, the light itself isn't crazy bright and it shines downward on the safe which is black. The nightstand is a dark red (cherry) color too, so there isn't a lot of direct light.

I ALWAYS advocate learning from the beginning from a course like this. This is especially good for couples since it takes the heat off of us to train/teach and it also prevents arguments... it also keeps you from having to unlearn bad habits. My son in law is horrible. Haven't spent any time with him at the range yet, but the few brief moments I've spent are a bit scary. I need to spend some more dedicated time with him on safe handling before we head to the range.

Look up Bill Tidwell as he teaches out of Reeds and Livermore. Excellent courses.

so i just released my 686 from Reeds, while we were waiting for my firearm, she was looking at the safes already and was pointing some out that we should get (she was even saying we could get matching furniture)

You know, more importantly than a safe, and especially if you and GF plan on being together for a while, is educating that youngin' on firearm safety.

I honestly can't recall my father ever locking up his pistol once he got home from work, but I can honestly say that by age 5 or 6, I knew damn well that giant( at the time) Colt of his was no toy. Granted, I think the only time he was not wearing it was when he was sleeping, but still. Laying down those fundamentals would go a long long way.

But in the meantime, yes, get a good lockbox.

Saw this from the post above with the CostCo box: I would take a manual lock like this over a biometric( I can't even get my damned iPhone to unlock half the time!)
