For me, it was a two month process. First looked to see what was aesthetically pleasing. Then read many, various reviews (including looking at YouTube) and narrowed my search to five 1911s. I then went to two ranges and rented four of the five 1911s for a 'test drive'. Keeping in mind these are (dirty) range pistols, I used the same ammo and put about 25 rounds through each; noting how the grip felt, recoil, movement of the slide, sights, how accurate I was, trigger pull, FTEs or FTFs, how the mag sits in the frame, etc.

I then narrowed it down to three and last week, took ownership of a Sig 1911 Stainless; which happens to be the one pistol I didn't test. I was able to handle/inspect the Sig at a local Turner's but there wasn't one I could find to shoot. With that said, there wasn't one bad review I could find anywhere of the pistol, which ended up being the deciding factor.

You need to figure out what's important to you on a 1911 and if there is an option you may want down the road get it on the gun now it will save you in the long run. I personally would go SIG or Kimber but that's based on what I prefer. I'd jump on the deal SIG has right now with the two guns for the price of one hell even if you don't want the .22 sell it and you got a gun for a damn good deal.

A Colt, but a good, all steel GI type Colt. Or the basic Rock Island.
If you plan on competing there may be better choices depending on your game
but for a good old 1911 I like 'em being as close to JMB's original design as possible.

As said above depends on what you will be using it for. Personally as a 1st 1911 I would recommend Springfield because they are awesome and customer service is awesome and everything they make is guaranteed forever. Ruger falls into the same category but the SR1911 is not allowed in CA however I just so happen to have one for sale.

Both are nice pistols. It really comes down to personal preference. Which one feels good in your hands, how it looks, etc. Good luck and happy hunting.

If you can swing it go for the TRP. Great trigger and mechanics. I love mine and it makes every range trip.

                            My Opinion:

Springfield Armory Loaded; less than $1000 if you can find one. Incredible 1911 for the money!

You will more then likely end up with both and more .... if I had to keep 1, it would be my Springfield TRP. I also owned the Colt XSE stainless before I transferred it to my brother in law and that was a really nice 1911 that you can find for $850-$1000 in the market place.

If you have Sig 1911 in mind, this is the perfect time to buy. Sig has a promo @ Turners or any participating shop. Buy a sig 1911 and get a Sig1911 .22 for free ($450 value)
