    Welcome to Calguns.
This has been discussed 1000 times here. It's all based on your price range. I'm a big fan of Springfield, so if you want to spend ~$1300 the TRP would be a great first 1911.

          Colt or Springfield?

What specific models are you comparing?

Otherwise its like saying I am going to buy a Ford or a Chevy? Which should I get...

A 1911 will speak to you and say, "Buy me!" That's the one.

All guns say that to me.

Welcome! What is your primary purpose for the pistol (range paper punching, competition practical or bullseye, etc.), and what's your price range?

For a production pistol, it would be difficult to go wrong with either Colt or Springfield (I have models from both makers)...you'll just have to select which models suits you best in your budget.

The answer would be a sig..

To be honest a new Colt wouldn't even be on my list..

The answer to this question requires the budget and the purpose to be divulged..

                    I would also toss out the HK45 as a non-traditional 1911 choice..

They're all decent. I do favor good warranties though, so SA or RIA would be a solid purchase that'll always work or be repaired free of charge.

You cannot beat a Springfield. Their lifetime warranty and customer service is superb. Springfield really backs up their product.
