    Flying with ammo?

    Hey Guys,
I have a couple of business trips over the next month to gun friendly states and since us lucky californians have a wicked ammo shortage I would like to buy some ammo and bring it back in my checked bag. I have read that it has to be less then 11lbs and in original box. I heard kris based on the airline. Has anybody ever had any issues doing this?

If you can only take 11 pounds is it even worth the headache? That's like 2-300 rounds of 45.

Depends on the airline. Check with them and see what their specific policy is

I agree with the you on 45 but I was thinking more on the current holy grail of ammo, 22lr 1000 rounds weighs 7.5lbs.

As already stated above, it varies by airline and most I've flown allow up to 11 lbs in the original package (or some similar language regarding packaging).

Very inconsistent from one airport to the next, and I'm not sure if you need to complete a firearms declaration if you only have ammo (I'd err on the side of declaring or at least checking if the form is required at the counter).

Honestly, I've found it easier to just throw the ORM-D labels on a box, package it up and ship it home.

I have flown many times with ammo and have not had a problem. Leaving it in the original boxes is best and I still put those in a secondary container that will save the ammo from breaking from the box when the luggage is thrown around (as it will be).

I have had no hassle whatsoever when transporting ammo or firearms on airplanes. You do not need the unloaded firearm(s) form if transporting ammo only. I would simply call the airlines ahead of time, as the max. weight allowed varies (by law capped at 11 lbs. but airlines also have their own policies and some do not allow the full 11 lbs.). Ask how much you are allowed to take and what their specific requirements are as far as putting it in a secondary container/locks. You will be fine.

I'm a truck driver and I hate to tell you but 22lr is hard to find anywhere.

In the last year I've been lucky and bought 22lr twice. Both times in Sidney NB. Once at Cabela's and once at Walmart.

I saw it in 50 boxes at 2 other Walmarts.

If you are in need of 22lr your best bet is to follow the ammo find thread.

                  Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

reloads or new ammo same as long as in containers designed to hold ammo. No ziplocs in cardboard box.

There's no glass ammo wall at the state line. If there's no .22 here there's probably no .22 in most other places either.

Better to ship it UPS. You can't carry enough to make it worth it even if your airline allowed it.

Sigstroker: 22 is harder to find everywhere put the hoarding is more prevalent in CA due to panic. Many states still have all types of ammo fairly easy to find. But we don't need to travel to get it. There's this thing called the phone and internet.

This past summer, I brought .22 LR and .223 back from Denver (happened to find some at a couple of Wal-Marts). I taped the boxes completely (all six sides) with clear carton sealing tape and threw them in the bottom of my luggage. The tape allowed TSA to see the original packaging, while making sure the ammo didn't end up all over the bottom of my suitcase.

I fly with guns all the time -it's always a toss up. By FAA regulations it's no more than 10 lbs of ammunition, and they have to be in the original packaging. I've flown with more than 20+ lbs of ammo, loaded magazines, and in other configurations that weren't supposed to happen. Just depends on who's at the ticket counter, if you baggage gets scanned, if the TSA decides to "randomly" open your locked case to check all your stuff. Out of the several dozen times I've flown with guns, no two experiences were alike -it's always a unique situation.
