Looking For a Cheaper Handgun

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. I joined because I am looking for more local information.

I am looking for some kind of reasonably accurate/reliable handgun for general use. It seems like only the expensive handguns are legal to sell here in CA. I want something for under $300. I really like the Star pistols but I have now idea if they are available to get here. I also want something with at least fairly common ammo. So any good ideas. I would really appreciate any info. Well for under $300 can get you a Walther P22 (.22 lr) new. These are fun for punching paper. There are a few other .22's you could get new in this price range. There is not much you can get as far as other calibers like 9mm and up for under $300 new. I have seen Springfield XD series for around the $450 range which is a very reliable gun. Keep an eye out in the for sale section of this forum. I had seen a XD-9 subcompact used for $350. With guns you often get what you pay for. Good luck in your search.

You can purchase a Walther p-1 9mm. at turner's for 320.00 out the door. I realize that it is $20.00 over the bench you set but, it is a decent gun for the money. You might look at a consignment buy. You probably can find a used wheel gun for under $300.00 out the door. Just don't forget that you will be paying $25.00 for the dros, and some dealers charge a fee on top of that. I was also thinking about the Makarov but I was worried about the price of ammo. How available is the ammo for them?

I would really like to get a Star BM. Let me know if this is completely out of the question but I have a friend who is from Texas and is taking a trip there. Can he buy a Star there and somehow legally get it back here and sell it to me? Its just an outlandish idea I had.

Or is it possible to find these at here and what prices should I expect?

hellow welcome to the site, well as for what to look for? i would suggest you pick up a old 38 4 or 6in shoot it as oten as you can the more experance you have shooting the better off youll be, you can decide later what you want to move uo to, as most of us know once you get started its hard to stop. good luck

Are we talking $300 out the door or $300 before taxes and fees? A used Ruger P95 might be a good start point for under $300, and as previously posted the Walther P1 (Post war P38s) is a decent choice too. My best buy brand new was the Taurus PT-145 for $299 + fees/taxes. Excellent little pocket cannon in .45 ACP. I'd avoid Hi-Points and Stars, look for a good used handgun from one of the major brands. Deals can be had. I found an FEG PJK9HP (Browning High Power Clone) which I got for $200.00 out the door on consignment at Turners. Awesome gun for a steal price. Keep looking, and in the mean time save as much $$$ as possible before buying something you regret cause you went to cheap.

My cousin has a hipoint 9mm.

The thing looks like its made from PVC plastic. It is top heavy, have to drive a pin out to get the slide off and the thing is not comfortable. I'd take a Sundance boa or a J-9 over it any day.

I would also recommend a FEG PJK9HP.I got a used one with 2 holsters
for $200.Excellent pistol.I shot it so much I wore out the recoil spring.

First thing to consider is Revolver Vs, Pistol, then Caliber. There are a few options out there as has been mentioned. Determine what type of action, then go from there.
