A Ruger MK1 is EASY to disassemble.
It's the re-assembly that people have trouble with until they learn the trick.
Then it's really easy to re-assemble too.

Gator M- neither of them (BuckMark or Ruger Mk1) are all that complicated. I think that he problem these guys are having is with takedown screws that should be fairly easy to remove-- but apparently were torqued in super tight at the factory, and possibly also secured with some kind of LocTite-type substance.

Yes, I know that the older manuals provided instructions for a more detailed disassembly of the pistol, but the current one (see http://media.browning.com/pdf/om/08_...ark_pistol.pdf) does not.

That's interesting to see. My Buckmark is brand new and has the older manual that tells you to take it apart. Perhaps if I had gotten this manual, I wouldn't have ever tried taking it apart(yeah right...)

I have an older Buckmark 5.5 Target, and was suprised to see that theynow say don't take it apart too. Mine has a slotted screw to remove the barrel, and was never hard to remove. You will eventually have to get the rail off to replace the little buffer pad inside the slide, not to mention that a ton of crap builds up in there. Being able to remove the rear rail screw and the barrel screw means no zero shift.

I dearly love my buckmark, and with the exception of the little buffer pad, a $6.00 part, mine has fired thousands of rounds of just about every type of .22 lr in it's 10+ years without any grief. Quite a few first time shooters experienced their first shots with it.

Thanks to Randall breaking lose that barrel screw, I had mine apart tonight the proper way for a cleaning. So much better than pulling the two sight base screws!

How do you know when the buffer is dead and needs to be replaced? Is it really obvious?

Chunks missing, multiple pieces, pretty obvious. It lasted a long time before dying. There are two different ones, old style and new style, I don't remember the cutoff date. You would obviously have the new one. Brownells has them. It would be a good idea to pick one up whenever you happened to order from them (or anybody that happend to have them) to avoid both a wait and shipping on a two bit part.
